Divorce in the Philippines has been a long controversial issue. But Albay Representative Edcel Lagman believes this is the right time to pass the divorce bill and the country may have its own version in 2019.

Lagman assures the public that the proposed Divorce Bill is a pro-women. He added that many women need divorce more than men because many of them are long victims of failed marriages.
Particularly, they are considering the physical violence as one ground for absolute divorce in the Philippines.

Lagman is the head of technical working group consolidating and discussing the measures filed to introduce divorce. He is confident that the measure will be passed into law before the end of the 17th Congress in 2019.

Meanwhile, Lagman pointed out that they are working for faster and cheaper process for absolute divorce where indigent litigants will be excluded from paying filing fees and court fees.
He added the proposed bill will give authority to the courts to appoint divorce attorney or divorce lawyers from Integrated Bar of the Philippines or from other legal association to lessen the fees.
