“We are grateful to the DOJ and the Prosecutor General for prioritizing these cases. We need to send a strong message to corrupt barangay officials that their criminal activities will not be tolerated,” aniya.

![POEA Employees, Recruiters Make P250,000 From OEC Issuance – Bello Labor secretary Silvestre Bello III disclosed the reason which prompted his office to suspend anew the issuance of OECs. Bello revealed that some corrupt POEA employees and recruitment agencies make an awful lot of cash through issuance of OEC. They have also been receiving reports of rampant illegal recruitment actvities. Some employees of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) conspire with illegal recruiters for the issuance of overseas employment certificates (OECs), and they become richer by as much as P250,000, according to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello , but her did not specify if its in a monthly or yearly basis. Sponsored Links DOLE issued a directive suspending the issuance of OEC starting November 13 to December 1 and may be subjected to extension depending on the result of their investigation. As an initial measure to cleanse the POEA and to stop illegal activities, a reshuffle will be implemented. The agency will be subjected to purging and Bello assures taht heads will roll once the investigating committee submits its report. POEA employees involved in irregularities would be charged with violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Law, and possibly large-scale estafa and bribery. “In the meantime, we have to stop the processing of applicants. That’s how serious the problem is. Some people in the POEA are earning a quarter of a million or more in said activities. We would be remiss in our job if we won’t do this,” the Labor chief added. According to Bello, some 75,000 applications of would-be OFWs are affected by the suspension order but said the problem “has to be nip[ped]in the bud or else [it]would further worsen.” He assured aspiring overseas workers though that the suspension is only temporary and acceptance and processing of the OECs would commence as soon as possible. The order will be implemented by the POEA, for compliance by all land-based private recruitment agencies. Last April, Bello also suspended the issuance of exemptions to direct-hire OFWs over reports linking employees of the POEA to alleged irregularities in the processing of documents. It, however, was lifted after a month upon conclusion of investigation of reported corrupt practices in the processing of documents for direct-hire workers.
