The Meaning of President Duterte's Tattoo - And Other World Leaders and Royals With Tattoos

President Duterte is so popular in the Philippines and around the world that he always appears on the TV daily. but have you ever noticed the tiny tattoo on Philippine President’s right hand? He is the first ever Philippine head of state to sport a tattoo. That tattoo on Duterte’s right hand just below the fold of the thumb and index finger stands for the “Magic Group” of the Guardians Brotherhood. That's according to Duterte’s presidential adviser on the peace process Jesus Dureza. “It’s a secret cult,” Dureza jokingly said. The facebook page for the Guardians say that as every letter of the acronym MAGIC has a meaning: M- stands for Magistrate, A – Advocator, G – Grievances, I – Impotent and C –Citizens. In Filipino, it translates to "Mga Mahistradong Tagapagtanggol ng mga Naaapi at Walang Lakas na Mamamayan." Dureza is a former schoolmate of Duterte and is also a member of the same Magic Group, and having the same tattoo. “We are members of Guardians Brotherhood. It’s a fraternal group of people. It started as a military fraternal group. Then they got also civilians as members,” Dureza explained. The first civilian members were mostly lawyers, like Dureza and Duterte. What is the purpose of the President's tattoo? Some members revealed that when Guardians secretly meet, they verified their identification to each other by showing the Guardian tattoo. Each sub-group has a different tattoo designating their circle of membership. Its placement also showed which area the member belonged. Some famous members of the fraternity are Sen. Gregorio Honasan, Sen. Manny Pacquiao and Ret. Gen Danny Lim. It is not surprising nowadays that world leaders are actually inked. Other leaders and even some members of Royal Families also sport tattoos. Here are some of them: Prince Frederik Of Denmark Crown Prince Frederik has tattoos that are on display when he trades his formal attire for swimming trunks. The 48-year-old prince has a tattoo on his bicep and one on his calf. They both represent his time serving in the military. UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill You might be surprised to know that the great Winston Churchill even sported some ink (though unverified by an actual image). This distinguished, and quite stubborn leader was the Prime Minister of England during World War II and had great influence over his country and the world. The purported tattoo was an image of an anchor tattooed on his arm. It is also said that his mother has a snake tattoo around her wrist. US President Teddy Roosevelt America’s own beloved Teddy Roosevelt had a tattoo of his family crest on his chest. Though that might not be surprising when you hear about his adventurous past as not only a wild cattle rancher and hunter but also as a war hero in the Spanish-American War. US President Andrew Jackson Andrew Jackson, seventh President of the United States, spent plenty of time in the military. After losing his parents to disease and war at 14 years old, he grew up to be a wealthy plantation owner and served as colonel and major general in the War of 1812. To pay homage to his time in the military, he got a tattoo of a tomahawk on the inside of his thigh. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau He is the 23rd and current Prime Minister of Canada and ranked as the 69th most powerful person in the world by Forbes. He is also the second youngest politician to ever become Prime Minister. Justin Trudeau has a long history of being in the public eye and is considered by many as a heart throb. He is a sports and yoga fanatic, thus it should come as no surprise that he has ink. His two tats are a globe and a raven. Czar Nicholas II of Imperial Russia Even in the nineteenth-century, tattoos were a popular way to commemorate a significant experience in people’s lives. For Nicholas II, the Czar of Imperial Russia, he too used tattoos as a way to remember special events. While the photo's quality makes it hard to see, he had a tattoo of a dragon which commemorated his time visiting Japan. Princess Stéphanie of Monaco As the youngest daughter of Prince Rainier III of Monaco and the beautiful actress Princess Grace Kelly, Princess Stéphanie is working in Hollywood and the world of fashion for her career choice. Princess Stéphanie has many tattoos, including a dragon-vine “S”on her back. George V of England George V was King of the United Kingdom and British Dominions, and Emperor of India from 1910 to 1936. Before becoming King, however, he spent time traveling abroad the HMS Bacchante where, on a visit to Japan, he found a local tattoo artist and had him tattoo a red and blue dragon on his arm. What do you think of President Duterte's ink? Do you know of any other world leader that has a tattoo? Let us know in the comments.
