OFW Stories: Splashed Her With Acid; Five days Without Food; Advised to Abscond By Her Agency

Stories of OFW especially the household service workers being maltreated never ends. Maybe not until we stop sending household workers in these areas particularly the Middle East. There are new of them almost everyday and each of them are heartbreaking. I wish that the time will come that all of these horrible stories will be no more. Gina Macalalad sought the help of the program Raffy Tulfo in Action who quickly responded and brought Gina's case to the proper authorities. She has been maltreated by her employer. According to Gina, her employer splashed her with muriatic acid that severely damaged her hand. She reported it to her agency, they ignored her as if she was only making it up just to be able to go home. The OFW has now been rescued and repatriated. She was so grateful of the help rendered by Mr. Raffy Tulfo who assisted them all the way. Another tragic experience of an OFW in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia who was sexually molested and deprived of food for five days. "Marian", who's real name is withheld for her safety, has been locked up in her employer's house without giving her any food except for water and few apples which she secretly taken from her employers fridge. She was also sold by her original employer to various employers and her present employer said that she will not be receiving any salary because they already gave it to her former employer. Marian brought the matter to the attention of her agency and they gave her a name and a number to call. She immediately called the contact person but after a single conversation, she has not hear from that person again. The agency promised her to do something about it but nothing has happened. Marian is already complaining of severe hunger and headache due to starvation. She sought the help of Bitag who immediately made contact with the agency but they refuse to issue any statement and instead promised that they will fix the issue. Bitag raised the issue to OWWA about the case of the OFW. OWWA assured of Marian's rescue and said she can also file a case against her agency for her unclaimed salary. Another household worker from Kuwait was crying as she appeal to anyone who can help her. Luzviminda Espiritu said that her employer was threatening her that they will tell the embassy that she stolen something from them. Just recently her employer has already threatened to kill her. Her relatives brought the matter to the agency but the agency's advice for the OFW is to escape. It is very unlikely for the agency to give that kind of advice which can be seriously dangerous on the part of the OFW. Absconding is a serious case that will put the life and the situation of the OFW in jeopardy. Luzviminda's relative sought the help of the program of Mr. Erwin Tulfo who immediately called her agency for appropriate actions. He said that Espiritu's case has to be a top priority because there is already a death threat involved and the life of the OFW is at risk. Luzviminda has now been safely repatriated and presently staying with her loved ones in the Philippines. Many Filipinos think that working abroad could bring them the life that they wanted for their family. The sad truth is that not everyone finds their luck by working abroad. With a lot of horror stories like these happening to OFWs, maybe it's a high time that we should consider making the opportunity to earn without leaving or children behind. There are lots success stories of former OFWs who found their "pot of gold" in their own backyard. They are the people who did not restrained themselves of income possibilities and did not feel afraid to do it. All we need is to believe.
