Wife, Sons of OFW Making Good Use of His Remittances For Ten Years

Overseas work has become a way of life for many Filipinos. As our OFWs sweat it out in foreign countries, shouldn't families of overseas workers contribute to the well-being of everyone and not just depend on remittances? This is crucial to ensure OFWs won't have to remain overseas workers forever.

Let's face it. Overseas work, sadly, has become a way of life for many Filipinos and many breadwinners have to separate from their spouse and children or their parents in order to have a chance for a "greener pasture", so to speak.

"Para sa Pamilya"

The basic unit of society - the family - has become the primary reason why many have chosen, and are still choosing, to work overseas; believing that they could earn more abroad than be locally employed.

To provide for their children's education as well as the family's daily needs, have their own house and lot, their own car and/or own business -- these  are among the major goals why many opt to work overseas and get a higher pay.

All OFWs fly across the miles and fight homesickness and boredom, hardships at work and cultural adjustments in their place of destination. It's not easy to live in a foreign land and live among strangers but Filipinos continue to try and cope -- to achieve their goals.

Timelines

It would usually take many years, even decades, before the OFWs' goals are achieved. However, Pinoys have different timelines as to the number of years they'll spend away from their family.

Here's an interesting example of an OFW and his family who planned in advance that ten years would be their timeline to achieve their targets.

Nanay Gail has been married to her husband for 22 years and they have three sons aged 21, 19 and 8. The couple both came from poor families and both experienced various challenges in life and were unable to get a college degree. However, both were tough, positive thinkers and together, they were determined to overcome poverty.

                                                                (Image via Pixabay)

After trying different livelihood sources and barely meeting all their family's needs, they agreed that her husband will have to seek work abroad. They discussed this together with their children and Nanay Gail's mother who lived with them since their marriage.

And so it was that her husband became an overseas worker for ten years; employed as a fruit box assembler in South Korea.

He also busied himself on learning different skills like carpentry and computer troubleshooting with the help of a few friends despite having no formal schooling about computers.

On the first two years, they paid loans acquired before her husband was able to work abroad. Nanay Gail continued working at a factory in Batangas for two years while her mother looked after the kids.

On the third and fourth year, they saved to buy a lot on which to build their home while setting a strict budget for the family's basic needs. In the years that followed, their house became a reality. A second-hand car followed a year after.

After they moved into their simple abode which was bare of finishing touches at the time, Nanay Gail, together with her sons, began breeding dogs and selling them to help their head of the family.

Moreover, the sons made sure to make their father proud and at peace by not indulging in vices and by studying well while they assisted their mother. They never got into any trouble and were raised to be simple persons; having no desire for grand material things. The two elder sons are graduating in a few months; both with a bachelor's degree.

But of course, it's not Scrooge mode all the time.

Because family comes first, they make sure birthdays and other special occasions are celebrated. And when the father comes home, they spend quality time as a family via outings and trips to different places. That's what the car is for!

The father, inspired by his family's cooperation and conscientious desire to somehow lighten his load, decided to busy himself with arts and crafts on his free time as well as bicycling to ward off boredom and homesickness.

He also stayed away from temptation and became more intent on saving more for their family's future by getting sideline work. In short, no extravagant spending and nights out with the boys!

Combine this with his family's efforts to help him augment their income --- and what have we got?

Ten years timeline achieved!

Yes, Nanay Gail is so happy to finally have their head of the family by their side for good this year. Their sons are so proud of their father and together, although more challenges in life are sure to come, they will face them with more readiness and unity.

Why? Because they have planned and communicated well as a family.

They believe that overseas work away from family is NOT supposed to be for a lifetime.

Church Decree to Annul Marriages Will Be Recognized Under Philippine Law

A new bill that will legalize Church-annuled marriages has been approved by the House committee on population and family relations. The panel with Laguna Rep. Sol Aragones as a chair recently approved the bill without a number yet as a substitute for House Bills No. 1629 and No. 3705, both of which sought the recognition of the civil effects of the Church annulment of marriages. "Church-decreed annulment bill as it is also called, the measure states that whenever a marriage, duly and legally solemnized by a priest, minister, imam, rabbi or presiding elder of any church or religious sect in the Philippines, is subsequently annulled or dissolved in a final judgment or decree, the dissolution “shall have the same effect as a decree of annulment or dissolution issued by a competent court.” It further provides that the final judgment of annulment issued by the church or religious sect shall be recorded in the appropriate civil registry within 30 days from its issuance. Sponsored Links According to the bill, the spouse involved must present a certified true copy of the final judgment or decree of declaration of nullity, annulment or dissolution of marriage registered with the appropriate civil registry prior to securing a marriage license. Due to the principle of separation of Church and State, there are separate processes in nullifying a marriage in a church and before the civil court. Deputy Speaker Gwendolyn Garcia, one of the authors of the bill, noted that although marriage was an institution that the state had an interest in, it was also considered a “religious act.” She also said that, logically, if the marriage, insofar as the contracting parties are concerned, is validated by the laws of the Church, then it necessarily follows that by the same laws, such marriage can also be invalidated or annulled. NEDA: YOU NEED P120,000 INCOME MONTHLY IN ORDER TO LIVE COMFORTABLY

WHAT IS THE IDEAL GROSS INCOME FOR A TYPICAL FILIPINO FAMILY WITH 4 MEMBERS?

According to the  survey conducted by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA),a typical Filipino family with four members has to earn Php120,000 gross monthly income  to live a "simple and comfortable" life. The said amount will allow the family to live in a medium-sized house, own a car, travel occasionally and send two children to college.
79.2% of the survey participants which can be regarded as majority, say that they aspire for a simple and comfortable life and the  16.9% Filipinos say they want  an affluent life, and the rest say they aspire fr the life of the rich,NEDA Director-General Emmanuel Esguerra said.

To reach Php120,000 target, both parents should earn Php60,000/month.

The International Labor Organization calculated the average monthly wage in the Philippines at only Php11,700.Thus,the "simple ,comfortable life" that every Filipino aspires is just a wish far to be fulfilled.

Esguerra clarifies that the study is meant to be more of a "vision" for the Philippines by 2040.The study does not ,in any way, meant for showing what our country is lacking, according to Esguerra.
“This is not meant to be prescriptive. This is just saying where Filipinos want to go, and the trade-offs. This is a vision”,He said.

According to NEDA Deputy Director-General Rosemarie Edillon, it will be easier for Filipinos to achieve this vision  as long as the economy continues to grow.
Edillon said:"If we grow like we did in the past, we will achieve this. But if not, majority of the Filipinos will not be able to achieve this," .
The Php120,000 gross 4-member family income is translated to USD11,000 per capita income and can eliminate poverty in the country if achieved.
Guillermo Luz, private sector co-chairman of National Competitiveness Council, echoed his remarks saying "the wish of the private sector can turn into a reality should the public and private sectors collaborate."

"For sure, we are going to need constant research over 25 years. This requires a great deal of patience and perseverance. We all need to fully understand the value of implementation – its nuts and bolts," Luz added.
However, this vision can help the Filipinos set their goals,be it a 25-year span or even longer. We need to do our part and we must start the change within ourselves.

China's plans to hire Filipino household workers to their five major cities including Beijing and Shanghai, was reported at a local newspaper Philippine Star. it could be a big break for the household workers who are trying their luck in finding greener pastures by working overseas China is offering up to P100,000 a month, or about HK$15,000. The existing minimum allowable wage for a foreign domestic helper in Hong Kong is around HK$4,310 per month. Dominador Say, undersecretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), said that talks are underway with Chinese embassy officials on this possibility. China’s five major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen will soon be the haven for Filipino domestic workers who are seeking higher income. DOLE is expected to have further negotiations on the launch date with a delegation from China in September. according to Usec Say, Chinese employers favor Filipino domestic workers for their English proficiency, which allows them to teach their employers’ children. Chinese embassy officials also mentioned that improving ties with the leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte has paved the way for the new policy to materialize. There is presently a strict work visa system for foreign workers who want to enter mainland China. But according Usec. Say, China is serious about the proposal. Philippine Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said an estimated 200,000 Filipino domestic helpers are presently working illegally in China. With a great demand for skilled domestic workers, Filipino OFWs would have an option to apply using legal processes on their desired higher salary for their sector. Kwento ng Isang OFW Galing Bahrain Matapos Bugbugin At Sunugin Ang Mukha Ng Malupit Na Asawa

Anong latest?

UPDATE THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS:
Dahil na rin sa social media, nakita natin na nagpost ang nanay ni kabayan ng picture ng kanyang larawan. Makikita ang mga bakas ng paso at sugat ngunit mukhang masaya na si kabayan.

Sana'y tuluyan ng ngang makarecover sa dagok ng buhay na ito ang isa nating kapwa OFW.

The Family Picture That Brought This Family Together Again

This family from Oklahoma is going viral after posting this family picture with the "ghost dad" and her 6 month old baby.

Sharry Smith lost her husband last July while she was pregnant.
She hired a photographer to take pictures of her and her baby and who did an amazing job in bringing them together as a family through this picture.

"It's amazing... Lane’s not physically here with us of course, but that picture represents to us that he’s always watching over us and he will always be there for us, no matter what.”

"Dalawang Mukha ng mga Bagong Bayani" an ABS-CBN Patrol ng Pilipino 10 January 2012

We were lucky to be featured in an ABS-CBN documentary when we went home last December 2011. Here is the 10th of January 2012 Patrol ng Pilipino PR issue and video below.

PATROL NG PILIPINO

PRESS RELEASE: ‘The Faces of OFWs’

Many Filipinos have traveled abroad to seek greener pastures but, not all who have successfully left the country have succeeded in reaching their dreams.

On Patrol ng Pilipino this Tuesday, get to meet some of the faces that make up the big number of Overseas Filipino Workers. There is Laarni Passion or Ate Leny who worked for nine months in Jeddah as a Domestic Helper. Last Christmas, she was able to come home to her family. After the holidays, despite her chance to work abroad, she and her family decided that she will not return to Jeddah and apply for a job here in the country instead.

While most of us will understand Ate Leny’s difficulty in working abroad, far away from her loved ones, the Solis Family all live in Saudi Arabia. Kenji Solis and wife Shiela have two kids. Last November, they traveled to the Philippines to have their 4 year old daughter Sophia experience Christmas in the Philippines because Christmas is not celebrated in Saudi.

Coming to work abroad is always a gamble. Some like Leny and the Solis Family are lucky but there are those who are not. Like the son of Edith Langamin, Jonard; he is only 28 years old. Jonard is on his 5th year in death row in Saudi Arabia.

His mother Edith recounted that on June 7 2007, Jonard accidentally killed a fellow Filipino Citizen on board the ship. While Jonard was forgiven by the family of his victim Robertson Mendoza, the law in Saudi territory still applies. The family has to produce 5 million pesos as blood money for Jonard to be freed. They were given 5 years lee way to gather the amount and if they were not able to raise the money by May, Jonard will be hanged.

They all leave the country in tears but with a hopeful heart. Some make it big while the others are met with bad luck. But no matter the turn of their fate will be, it is always the Filipino’s love for their family that will push them to leave their nest and hope for the best.

Catch Jeff Canoy on Patrol ng Pilipino as he shows the varied struggles being faced by some of the Overseas Filipino Workers, Tuesday night at 9:15 over DZMM Teleradyo and after Bandila on ABS-CBN Channel 2.

Here is the PR of this at the national daily,

PEBA Family Video - They're asking for More!

What makes the Pinoy Expats/OFW Blog Awards is the theme. The nominees scribble their keyboards and write out of their hearts and mind. What is also unique are the small videos that PEBA will be releasing in support for strengthening families - especially OFW families.

When we started gathering the photos, and when we announced it, there was a few response. But after releasing this video, a lot of people email their family pictures to be added in a series of 'feel good' teaser's and ads.

Half month more to go before PEBA end the nomination process, and a month to go before the Photo contest submission deadline, and PEBA is getting better and bigger with the sponsoring of big companies like

NOKIA, Philippines
Geiser Maclang
Celestial Media
John Robert Powers
Book Divas
Creative Media Max
Adred Creatives
Business Mirror

and more coming!

PEBA believes that the strength of a country, especially the Philippines is not found in Malacanang or in military camps. The true strength of a nation lies at the heart of its people, and at the walls of a holy place we call - HOME.

PEBA will be releasing a series of uplifting videos encouraging OFWs and Filipino to strengthen the bonds of unity and love within their families that will in turn strengthen the nation not just economically but morally.

If you want to participate and have your family photo added to videos such as this, please send them to

photos@pinoyblogawards.com

and we will be grateful for your participation.
