High-Cost Weddings Often Results To Marriage Failure — Studies

Does an extravagant wedding guarantee a bountiful and happy marriage? People spend an awful lot of money on their wedding, making sure that this once-in-a-lifetime event will be memorable.
The irony of this is that, in a study, they have found out that a couple who spent a large amount of money on their wedding often end up in separation.

Economics professors Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo Mialon conducted a survey from 3,000 participants who are married people and the results have shown that there are several characteristics that increase the likelihood of failed marriage.

There are many factors that the researchers looked into. One of these is the amount that the couples poured in for their engagement rings. “Specifically, in the sample of men, spending between $2,000 and $4,000 (Php 104,000 – 208,000) on an engagement ring is associated with 1.3 times greater hazard of divorce as compared to spending between $500 and $2,000 (Php 26,000 – 104,000),” the paper reads.

Another factor that the researchers noticed is the costs of the wedding ceremony. Those whose weddings cost less than $1000 (Php 52,000) showed a significant decrease in the likelihood of separation. The results show a huge difference compared to those couples who spent around or more than $20,000 (Php 1,042,800) as the likelihood of separation increased by 1.6 times for women.

On an interesting note, one of the few expenditures which lowered the risks of separation was going on a honeymoon. The researchers found that couples who went for a honeymoon are “significantly associated with a lower hazard” from thoughts of divorce.

The studies conclude that instead of spending so much on rings and the ceremonies, it might be better to spend money and quality time between couples on a private, post-wedding getaway.

For many, it has to be grand and fabulous—a cathedral wedding celebrated with much festivity and luxury at an exclusive hotel reception, but for some, a simple ceremony will do— done in simplicity with selected friends and relatives. How much will it cost you to have an average to en grande church wedding ceremony nowadays?

For the church wedding ceremony, it will cost P5,000 to P20,000 depending on the regulation of the church where your wedding will take place. Different local churches has their own charges.

You may need to pay them around P70,000 to P150,000 for videos, photos, including wedding photo booth.

The fact that you have to pay all of these, you are already spending even before the wedding, your wedding gown and the entourage cost you around P20,000 to P50,000. Your wedding ring would be around P15,000 to P50,000 for the pair and another P15,000 to P50,000 for the invitations, souvenirs, wedding planner, wedding entertainers including the singers and the hosts.

The Groom Tried To Extort Money From His OFW Bride-To-Be Got Sacked

A man was arrested by the authorities after trying to extort P20,000 from her bride-to-be. he told his future wife that he will not attend their wedding unless the bride gives him the money he was asking.

Raul Domingo, 39, was arrested in a restaurant at Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City in an entrapment operation conducted by Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Quezon City.

He was Arrested as he received the marked money given by her fiance, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who works as a music teacher in Singapore. Paula (real name withheld), 40, said that the suspect threaten him that he will not come to their wedding if she will not give him the money. After reporting to the authorities, she arranged her meeting with Domingo that led to his arrest.

Investigation revealed that it is not the first time that the suspect asked money from her. The OFW confessed that she wanted to settle and have a family and she believed that Domingo will be her partner for life but it turned out that her fiance is an extortionist who only wanted her money.

The CIDG conducts further investigation to find out if the suspect has other victims aside from Paula. CIDG is looking on a possibility that the suspect is acting on a modus operandi that targets people especially the OFWs which according to them are most prone to these similar kind of swindling.

Paula said they had been in a relationship for 5 months after meeting each other on a social media site. They already had their civil wedding and their church wedding is also set but after the civil wedding, the victim had no idea as to the whereabouts of the suspect. The suspects later contacted her via phone asking for the said amount of money. The suspects refused to make any statement. he is now facing robbery extortion charges as well as violence against women.

 On March, before going home prior to their wedding, they paid a sum of P142,000 to the said wedding coordinator. After sending the money, the coordinator replied after a week. When the couple went home to the Philippines, they can no longer contact the person. Later they found out that Ocampo has swindled many people using the same modus, everyone has paid her an awful lot of cash which, if summed up, will cost over a million pesos.
