With the inflation rate soaring to record high in recent months, the highest of which was pegged at 5.2% last July 5, 2018, the increase in prices of basic commodities becomes almost inevitable.

For an OFW sending money to his or her family in the Philippines, the weakening of peso against the dollar, doesn’t necessarily spell more money or savings.

Whatever is gained from higher dollar exchange rate is easily devoured by the rising cost of living.

Nevertheless, today could be the best time to send more dollars as this means higher value for the money, which in turn means more spending power for OFW families in the Philippines.

Below are some of the best places in Manila to exchange your dollars for the best rate possible:

      A.Money changers:
1.
    1. Czarina Foreign Exchange – This money changer has many branches in Metro Manila including their main office in Ayala, Makati City and several branches in Glorrieta Malls and in Farmer’s Plaza and Ali Mall in Quezon City.

    2. Edzen Money Changer – Located in Mabini St. in Ermita, Manila, Edzen is always known to offer the highest exchange rate in the capital.
3.
    3. Sanry’s Money Changer – It has branches in Link Building in Ayala and in Glorietta 5 Mall. With over 20 branches, Edzen has the reputation of offering competitive rates
4.
   4. Tivoli Money Changer – This money changer has several branches in Manila and Quezon City. They pride themselves for the ‘worry-free money exchange experience’.

Other options include the Emerald Money Changer, Core Pacific Money Exchange, Bamboo City Money Changer and the Naila’s Money Changer.

    B.    Remittance centers - For those who don’t want to go farther from where they live, there’s always the option to go to remittance centers with branches found almost anywhere like a convenience store.

The best remittance centers to exchange your dollars are the Cebuana Lhuiller, Western Union, Palawan Pawnshop and the M Lhuiller.

All you need is an identification card (ID) for verification purposes. Also, if you are receiving money from abroad and you want it immediately changed to peso, this is the best place to go.

    C.  Foreign exchange centers in malls – Malls like SM and Robinson’s have foreign exchange centers that caters to OFWs who want a more convenient, if not safer place, to exchange their money.

While they mainly accept US dollars only, some branches do accept other currencies like Japanese Yen, Saudi Riyals, Euros and others but you may have to check with them first via a phone call before heading out.

    D.   Banks – Banks have always been one of the best places for foreign exchange transactions. But due to their strict rules, OFWs tend to move away from banks and chose either money exchange or malls.

But in case you are left with no other alternatives and decide to do the transaction with a bank, keep this in mind: They only accept foreign exchange transactions if you have an existing account, and in most cases, you will need to go to the specific branch where you opened your account.

Also, they would often require sets of valid IDs like passport and other government IDs.

Having said that, here are the best banks offering the best rates in the country - Banco De Oro (BDO), Bank of Philippine Islands (BPI) Metrobank and the Philippine National Bank (PNB).

US DOLLAR EXCHANGE RATE NEARING P50, KSA RIYAL NEAR P13.50

Dollar surges and Asian market take a hit as Federal Reserve raise interest rates. US dollar against Philippine peso went to as high as P49.92, few points away before it reaches P50.

Dollar surges and Asian market take a hit as Federal Reserve raise interest rates. US dollar against Philippine peso went to as high as P49.92, few points away before it reaches P50.

The U.S. dollar was sharply higher in early Asia trading, with the yen hardest hit after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced its first interest-rate increase of 2016 and signaled it expects to increase rates more quickly than previously anticipated in 2017. Marketwatch reports that
Fed officials said they would increase the federal-funds rate by a quarter percentage point to between 0.50% and 0.75%, a move consistent with a brightening economic outlook.
The Fed now expects the median fed-funds rate to be 1.4% by the end of 2017, reaching 2.1% at the end of 2018 and 2.9% in 2019. That implies three quarter-percentage-point interest-rate increases over each of the next three years, a faster pace than officials projected in September, when they only saw two rate increases next year.
Currency traders said the full extent of the reaction to the Fed rate increase won’t be known until European markets have had time to absorb the news.
The reaction in currency markets in early Asia has seen the U.S. dollar jump to its highest levels since February against the yen, with broad gains also posted against the euro and dollar bloc currencies.
The U.S. dollar climbed above 117.0 yen USDJPY, +0.30%   after trading closer to 115.0 yen ahead of the Fed announcement. WSJ Dollar Index BUXX, +0.16%   is up 0.8% to 91.12, which would mark its highest closing value in more than 14 years. The Australian, Canadian and New Zealand dollars were sharply lower against the greenback.
Richard Grace, the global head of currency strategy at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said the Fed is navigating its way through some tricky waters. Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen has acknowledged the potential for stronger GDP growth if big infrastructure spending by the Trump White House occurs, while also acknowledging monetary conditions have tightened in the past month through a higher U.S. dollar and big increases in U.S. bond yields, he said.

“We were certainly surprised by the Fed move,” said Tim Condon, head of research for Asia at ING. “There was a risk [of a hawkish Fed] that did materialize.” Condon added that a stronger dollar and the selloff in the S&P 500 threatens to “be the most contagious” for Asian markets, excluding Japan.
Overnight, the Federal Reserve raised the federal-funds rate by a quarter of a percentage point to between 0.50% and 0.75%, and said it expected to raise short-term rates next year by another 0.75 percentage points, spread over three rate increases.

Filipina In Abu Dhabi Caught Trying To Rob A Money Exchange?

video courtesy of Abu Dhabi Police

According to reports, a Filipina expatriate in Abu Dhabi  has disguised herself last Thursday,  by wearing an abaya and tarha while carrying a plastic gun as she tried to rob a money exchange.

Policemen said, they were able to take the 33 year old woman into custody after one of the employees alerted them. The CCTV footage showed that she threatened the employees with the concealed weapon, which was later found out to be a plastic gun.

The woman said that she did it in order to pay her debt amounting to Dh 140,000.

Abu Dhabi police bust attempted robbery at money exchange.

Watching through the video though no face has been shown, we doubt that a Filipino has done this or will do this. We asked the Philippine embassy or the consulate to look into this matter and issue a statement if necessary.
