What Happens To Your Body and Health When You Use Cellphone Before Going To Sleep

As most mobile phones at present enable users to do many things other than calling and texting, many people now have the habit of using their cell phones from time to time. And many people, for various reasons, use mobile phones even at bedtime--unaware that they are already putting their health at risk by doing such.

According to Health Hacks, people must be aware that using cellphones before sleeping is not good for their health.

"Unfortunately, the habit of checking our phones before going to sleep is very ingrained--but the consequences for our health are severe and often underestimated.

Here are the reasons why you should stop the habit of checking your phone before going to sleep:
  • When you use cellphone before going to sleep, your brain receives a stimulus to stay awake. When you look at a very bright screen, a stream of photons tells your brain, "It's not time to sleep yet." When this happens, the release of the sleep hormone melatonin is inhibited.
  • It enables the onset of certain diseases. Obviously, the wakeful state leads to a reduction in a person's sleeping hours. In turn, insomnia increases one's susceptibility to illness. It can lead to certain conditions; including depression, irritability, and drug abuse.
  • There is a risk of brain damage. When the habit is deeply-rooted, neural problems can occur over time. This can result in the reduction of a person's ability to memorize, to concentrate, and to solve the problem.
  • It increases physical problems. If we do not sleep, our bodies suffer. It can increase appetites and result in weight problems.

Gadget Use Brought This Kid to the Hospital - What Happened?

Do you allow your kids - children below 12 years old - to use your gadgets? Even worse, have you bought them their own gadgets? If so, read this story of what happened to Mikayla, a six-year old girl who is hooked on tablets and TVs. The event happened last June 27, around 10:30PM at the home of Mikayla. While her mom was cleaning their house, Mikayla let out a loud scream. Her mom thought that she saw a cockroach - she is allergic to it - and asked what's wrong. Mikayla let out another scream while calling her mom. Sensing that something is wrong, her mom ran in panic only to find Mikayla on the floor, shaking uncontrollably. Checking for any sign of injury from a fall or slipping, her mom asked what was wrong or what happened. Mikayla answered "mommy, I can't move my (left) arm." Trying to make sense of what's happening, the mother kept on asking her daughter about what happened and what she is feeling if any. She can only answer "“mommy, I really can't move my arm.. look it's like jelly!” When her mom asked Mikayla to get up from the floor and lie down on the bed, they were shocked because she could not stand by herself. By this time, her mom noticed that Mikayla's lips were uneven, and that her speech is becoming slurred. The mom decided to call over her brother who lives next door. More calm than the mother, Mikayla's uncle asked her again what happened, but he got the same answer. She couldn't move her arm nor close her fingers when asked to do so. Her uncle decided to massage her arm and hand, and after a few minutes, Mikayla could move her fingers and her arm and she slowly recovered. When things settled, the adults asked Mikayla what happened and what she was doing before the incident happened. According to Mikayla, after taking a bath, she proceeded to watch the TV. She was also playing with her earrings at the time, sticking it in her crayons. That was when her left hand started shaking and she felt dizzy at the same time. What immediately came to mind was that she may have suffered a stroke (except that it was her left arm that was "paralyzed" but it was her right lips that were skewed)! They have decided to bring Mikayla to a hospital. Around 12:30AM of June 28, they went to the hospital, where they met Mikayla's dad who came from work. The doctor interviewed them to try and seek out probable cause for her seizure. The residing doctor could not determine the cause of her seizure so he ordered CT scan as well as X-ray for Mikayla. She was also confined so doctors could conduct further observation. By 8:30AM, Mikayla was back to her normal "makulit" self. Citing concern for the unexplained seizure, the pediatrician referred them to a neurologist for children. The pediatric neurologist interviewed them, then conducted physical tests and ordered EEG and MRI scans. The CT scan and X-ray results all came back OK. The MRI however showed one vein that was standing out. A neurosurgeon who reviewed the MRI explained that it was normal, probably an effect of the seizure. Another MRI was ordered two weeks from that day just to make sure. More concerning was the result of the EEG. The results showed that Mikayla's right brain reaction to flickering lights were slower than normal. The neurologist said it was an effect of the seizure as well. So what was Mikayla's condition and what caused it? The pediatric neurologist's believe that she suffered from Focal Seizure. What caused the seizure is not 100% certain, but the neurologist believes that the excessive use of gadgets is the main trigger. Mikayla's mom agreed with the doctors assessment. She admitted that Mikayla was immersed in her iPad and TV since vacation started last March. Her mom is partly taking blame, citing her work at home business, as well as having no help at home nor in her business. (Mikayla's mom makes crafts and gift items. Mikayla left the hospital June 30th. Her mom was advised to monitor Mikayla closely and that her screen time - gadget and TV use - should be limited to two hours a day only. Children her age should also get enough sleep to avoid these incidents. Realizing her lapses as a parent, Mikayla's mom is now sharing her story to the internet to make other parents aware of the dangers of excessive and unsupervised used of gadgets among children. She stated "each parent should be aware of their child, regardless of how busy we are." Looking back, she now realized that her daughter actually showed early signs of Focal Seizure. Weeks prior, Mikayla sometimes had lack of eye contact and focus when they talked. Sometime, Mikayla appears to be spaced-out, not responding to calls, then suddenly getting surprised. She also suffered from memory loss at one point. Mikayla's mom admitted, she let her use the iPad for long hours just to keep Mikayla from bothering her while she worked - a sad truth that most of us are guilty of. See Mikayla's mom's original FB post here.
