The WHO recently warned "digital gamers" or "video gamers" against developing "gaming disorder".
"Gaming disorder is defined as a pattern of gaming behavior characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences," it stated.
The international health group noted that "gamers" should be concerned if they have behaviors that lead to the exclusion of other daily activities. They should also be vigilant over any changes in their physical or psychological health and social functioning.
Signs and symptoms
But when can we say that it is already too much?
Here are the signs and symptoms of gaming disorder:
- When the behavior is dominating the whole life of a person.
- The behavior pattern must be of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
- Such behavior pattern would normally have been evident for at least 12 months.
The diagnosis of gaming disorder, on the other hand, can only be made by a health professional specifically trained in making such assessment, the WHO noted.
