Angry and dismayed. This is what passenger Pamela Anne Jacar feels when her money was lost in her checked-in luggage in her flight with Air Asia last June 15.

According to Pamela, she waited for more than an hour for her bags in conveyor after the landed in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

Pamela said, her luggage and backpack are locks, but when she gets is, she was shocked because her things inside are already scattered. Upon checking, her money (P8,000 and 312 won) are missing. She said the wallet is still inside the bags but the money is gone.

Pamela believes that somebody tampered her things and stole her money.

The passenger said, she complained at the airlines but according to Air Asia's investigation, no one tampered her baggage or any pieces of baggage of their passengers.

The airlines further said they have no responsibilities over lost valuable things in baggage since passengers are being advised not to check-in their money, jewelry and other important or valuable things.

According to Pamela, this is her first time to check-in her bags after staff from Incheon International Airport did not allow her to carry them.

Even MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal supports Air Asia's statement.

Monreal said anything valuable should not be check-in, but if you really want to check in money and valuable things in your baggage, you can declare it in the airport and pay a premium so that it will be insured in case of loss.

He further advises passengers to put the money and jewelry in a hand carry baggage or in a pouch.

According to Airsafe.com, here are 5 items you should never put in a checked-in bag.
1. Money related items:

  • Cash
  • credit cards
  • traveler's checks
  • blank checkbooks
  • securities
  • and anything else that has monetary value or should either be on your person or in your carry-on baggage. If you lose money-related items in your checked baggage, airlines are not obligated to compensate you.
2. Jewelry:
  • Necklaces
  • rings
  • diamonds
  • other precious stones, gold, silver
  • other precious metals
  • expensive watches
  • and other small and valuable items like these should also stay out of checked baggage. Like the situation with money, the airline isn't obligated to compensate you for the loss.
3. Laptops and electronic devices:
  • Laptops
  • cell phones
  • and other small personal electronic devices should remain on your person or in your carry-on bags.
4. Medically related items
  • Prescription medication
  • other medications
  • and other medical items should remain with you in the cabin.
5. Other items: If it is small and valuable, or if replacing it would be difficult or expensive, then keep it with you in the cabin. Examples include passports and other identification, keys; eyeglasses or sunglasses; photos, exposed film, tickets, art, boarding passes, travel vouchers, mail, financial records, business documents, manuscripts, heirlooms, collectible items, favorite toys, portable data storage devices like flash drives, and software. If you have something else that is small and that you don't want to lose, keep it with you.
