A proposed bill to put excise tax on "salty, processed foods" such as instant noodles, canned meat goods, junk foods and other foods which contains salt.
Masbate Rep. Scott Davies Lanete who is a doctor, proposed to add excise tax to ‘salty, processed foods’. It includes corned beef and luncheon meat, processed meat like hotdog, junk foods like potato chips, and instant noodles.
According to the doctor/lawmaker, he pushes his proposed bill to discourage patronization of non-nutritious foods and could possibly cause ailments due to excessive sodium content.
Congressman Lanete also mentioned that other countries such as Vietnam, Uganda, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Jordan, Cambodia among others that implement “sin taxes” on excessive use of salt to make its citizens aware of their own health.
Lawmakers will study and make debates regarding the proposed bill. If being approved, the bill will possibly hit around 50 percent of all the products available in supermarkets which a lot of foodstuffs contain salt in its ingredients.
Associations who run supermarket businesses assume that the excise tax will hit almost all of the Filipinos who eat processed canned meat goods and instant noodles which contains salt.
For the foods that poor Filipinos can afford most of the time to have additional taxes, it will surely burden the low income earners. But the lawmaker said he is just giving a healthier choice for the Filipinos. To choose fresh foods instead of processed ones.
