Magdalo Partylist Representative Gary Alejano has a proposal of renaming the Philippines. He said it can be made possible by creating a commission that will review it.
According to a Filipino historian named Professor Michael Charleston "Xiao" Briones Chua, a history Professor at the De La Salle University. He said he is "quite open" yet ambivalent of Alejano's bill.
He explained that both the name "Pilipinas" and "Philippines" are both derivatives of a Spanish name "Filipinas".
"The reason for renaming our country is to throw away the vestiges of colonialism, to establish our national identity, and to define how our nation, our people, and our national language will be addressed internationally," Alejano explained.
He said that American and Spanish colonization has muddled our identity as a nation.
Alejano said that the committee that will review the name change of the philippines will be named Geographic Renaming Commission, and it will be composed of commissioners from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), and the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino.
Netizens slammed the said proposal dubbing it as nonsense and a waste of public funds. Mr Erwin also questioned the timing of Alejano's proposal as he announced it on June 12 in time for the 119th celebration of the Philippine Independence.
The history professor however clarified that renaming the Philippines is cannot remove the vestiges of colonialism as Alejano said. It is not the way to do it. It is not easy to wash away colonialism just by renaming the country.
