In the Philippines, their obsession with with skin is blamed on hundreds of years of colonization and it goes on to today's modern women. To them, whiter skin is more beautiful.
Melanin is responsible for brown shade of our skin. It also gives color to our hair and eyes. It is produced by cells called melanocytes. The more melanin you have, the darker your color will be.
Melanin acts as a natural sunscreen to protect you from harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. Lack of UV protection may cause skin cancer. Melanin deficiency or otherwise known as albinism, which causes lack of pigmentation in skin, hair and eyes. People suffering from albinism or "albinos" has a great risk of having skin cancer.
Melanin also play an important role to human's ability to hear. According to the researchers, a lack of melanocytes in the inner ear results in cochlear impairment, or hearing loss.
Skin whitening products slows the production of melanin in the outer layer of the skin. Another thing, health whitening products contains toxic chemicals such as hydroquinone, mercury and steroids. So it does not only stop the production of your natural UV protection, it also exposes you to health hazards.
