A bill that seeks to end the spread of fake news has been proposed by Senator Joel Villanueva. The proposed bill will penalize individuals who will fabricate and disseminate wrong informations or fake news using any form of media.
Under the proposed Senate Bill 1492 or the Anti-Fake New Act Of 2017, violators will be fined amounting from P100,000 to P5,000,000 and jail term from one year to maximum of five years.
Accomplices or the people who will help to spread these fake news will also face P50,000 to P3,000,000 and imprisonment of 6 months up to maximum of 3 years.
However, for the government officials who will violate the bill the fines and jail term will be doubled and they will be disqualified to hold any public office.
A week before Villanueva filed of the bill, the senator criticized Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II as he made false claims against some lawmakers who belong to the opposition as having been potentially involved in the Marawi conflict.
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) also makes a call to spread the truth and refrain from patronizing those who maliciously spread fake news.
