Unlike Philippine law about debts, the law against debt in GCC countries are more strict. Even the debt you evaded 10 years ago could still land you in jail in the Middle East.
On June last year, 20 OFWs had been arrested while on transit in Dubai for their debts 10 years back.
Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes, warned the OFWs with outstanding debts not to flee from it because even if they managed to go back to the Philippines, they might get caught the moment they land on any GCC airport for transit even if they are using a new passport.
Attorney Barney Almazar, a licensed UAE legal consultant and partner at Gulf Law who helps Filipinos with debt cases, said that former residents who have outstanding debt may still be able to pay their loans from abroad to avoid imprisonment.
