The long wait for justice is finally over for the OFW who was severely maltreated by her employers in Singapore.
The two employers of a Filipina HSW who starved her by not giving her adequate food in Singapore that was reported in December of 2015, pleaded guilty and are now both in jail and asked by the court to pay fines. Lim Choon Hong, 47, was fined $10,000 (P359,000) and three weeks jail term. His wife Chong Sui Foon, also 47, was sentenced for three months in jail.
Lim was convicted in March last year for of violation the Employment of Foreign Manpower (Work Passes) Regulations 2012 requiring employers to pay and provide adequate food and medical treatment for their household helpers. Chong was found guilty of aiding Lim in committing the offense.
The OFW named Thelma Oyasan Gawidan, 40 years old ran away on April 14, 2014. According to the report she was only given two meals a day, with each ration consisting of instant noodles and a slice of bread. She used to weight 49 kilos in January of 2013, when she escaped in April 2014, she was only weighing 29 kilos, after working for 15 months she suffered a significant weight loss due to insufficient intake of food. She was then immediately taken and was admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH).

Aside from that, the OFW also said that she did not receive her salary and had her mobile phone kept from her while she was employed with them from January 2013 to April 2014. She wasn't even allowed to brush her teeth nor stay on the bathroom for a long time. gawidan said she was not able to ask for help to anyone because her employers kept her on watch whatever she was doing.
On April 18 , 2104, she said she could not tolerate the treatment any longer, she managed to escape and asked for help at a shelter run by the Humanitarian Organization for Migrant Economics (Home).

During the trial, Lim said his wife had previously suffered from anorexia nervosa and from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Due to her condition, he said their lifestyle “revolved around food and cleanliness.”
Gawidan, is now employed and working with another family, still in Singapore.

According to TIEZA ( Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority), it is a levy imposed by the Philippine government on individuals who are leaving the Philippines, as provided for by Presidential Decree (PD) 1183.
A full travel tax for first class passenger is PhP2,700.00 and PhP1,620.00 for economy class. For an average Filipino like me, it’s quite pricey. Overseas Filipino Workers, diplomats and airline crew members are exempted from paying travel tax before but now, travel tax for OFWs are included in their air ticket prize and can be refunded later at the refund counter at NAIA.
