According to the new rule, the contents of the balikbayan boxes should be on an itemized list, if the item is bought abroad brand new, the receipts must be attached to it. The sender also has to prove that he/she is a Filipino.

The forwarding companies warned that the new rule could slow down and delay the delivery of balikbayan boxes to their recipients.
The implementation of Customs Memorandum Order 04-2017 will result to hassle of sending balikbayan boxes and the issue will affect millions of OFWs worldwide.

Many OFWs often send balikbayan boxes especially during Christmas season and the implementation of this new rule could possibly mean hassle to them.

These new rules stated in the Customs Memorandum Order are as follows: 1. The shipper/sender has to provide an itemized list of the contents of their balikbayan box. 2. If the contents of balikbayan box includes brand new items, the sender should attach the receipt of the said items. 3. The sender of the balikbayan box must present a proof that he/she is a Filipino citizen and, thus; 4. The shipper must provide a photocopy of his/her passport.
"ADVERTISEMENTS"

The Bureau of Customs also said that the recipient of the balikbayan box is a legitimate relative of the sender to avail of the privileges set by the government to the OFWs. Failure to provide proper documentation could cause the BOC to charge corresponding duties and taxes for the balikbayan box without supporting documents. The Bureau of Customs said that the provisions under CMO 04-2017 are basic and is already being practiced in different countries.

Qatar is Buying 72 F-15 or $21B Worth of Fighter Jets From the US

Days after US Donald Trump accused them of allegedly supporting terrorism, Qatar has signed a $12 billion contract to buy F-15 war jets from the United States according to the reports by the defense ministry. Apparently, the contract was signed in a meeting between US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis and Qatari Minister of State for Defense Affairs Khalid al-Attiyah according to the source as reported by Reuters. Bloomberg news said that the deal is set for a total of 36 fighter jets produced by a Boeing subsidiary Mc Donnell Douglas. An unnamed Qatari official was quoted as saying the US-Qatar relationships are "deep-rooted". In November, the US approved the possible sale of 72 units F-15QA war jets to Qatar amounting to $21.1 billion. The deal come only weeks after a $110 billion arms deal was made between US and saudi Arabia, which the White House describes as the biggest in history. Trump earlier made a remark that Qatar has “historically been a funder of terrorism at a very high level.” It was after the neighboring GCC countries severed ties with Doha. As Kuwait tries to bridge the row between qatar and concerned Arab brothers, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan strongly back Qatar, dubbing the Saudi-led measures "inhumane and against Islamic values". Qatar, an important exporter of natural gas, is a known American ally in the Middle East. It also hosts the largest US military base in the region. In fact, amid the growing tension between Qatar and other gulf states, two combat US Navy ships have sailed into Doha for joint drills with the Qatari navy according to the report. An unnamed Qatari official was quoted as saying the US-Qatar relationships are "deep-rooted".
