A Manifesto of Filipino bloggers and netizens

We, Filipino bloggers and netizens from across the Philippines and those based overseas, coming from diverse backgrounds and specialties, using various new media outlets, hereby come together and call for the formation of a bloggers association of the Philippines that shall unite us around common and beneficial objectives and aspirations, mainly:

• The promotion and defense of the right to free expression
• The promotion and development of blogging, vlogging, photoblogging, microblogging and other online creative and expressive forms in all their diverse categories, topics and types
• The gathering and sharing of Philippine blogging’s best practices that reflect our contributions to ourselves and our online communities, media, causes, organizations and businesses, government, the nation and the world. 
• The drafting and adoption of a code of ethics that underscore the community’s responsibility and maturity; and
• The discussion of issues and concerns that confront the community and members of the community
• The promotion of more affordable, reliable and better internet access in the country  

The association we aspire to form is voluntary in character, national in scope, democratic in decision-making, and progressive in outlook.

• We draw inspiration from and ask the participation of the city-wide, provincial, regional and island-wide associations, summits and conventions initiated by bloggers across the country.
• We want an association that makes decisions based on democratic processes, consensus-building and mutual benefit.

A long time has passed since the first blog posts and first blogging events. We are now a bigger, stronger and influential community. Businesses, causes and government have started to organize themselves to interact and engage with us. And we also face challenges within and outside our growing community.


The Philippines, our country and people are also expecting more from us, and we bravely and fearlessly say that we want to do more and achieve more.


In view of all these and more, we declare that there’s no stopping the formation of a most awesome bloggers association for our country.

Last year, I suggested the creation of a bloggers’ association to some PEBA officers. The idea came from our experiences in the Kabayan Bloggers (KaBlogs), where we have to deal with anti-OFW blog posts and bloggers. However, we brushed off the idea because we lack PEBA volunteers and the time for another huge undertaking.

I received a copy of the manifesto on the making of the National Bloggers Association and these are some of the questions I asked from Tonyo Cruz, one of the brain behind the idea:

• Are the items in themanifesto final?

• Can this be refined?

• Who were given a copy of this manifesto?

• From the line, “The association we aspire to form is voluntary in character, national in scope,” where do the OFWs fit?

• From the line, “We draw inspirations from and ask...” Can OFW bloggers be

also included in this line?

• Can we change the phrase “most awesome bloggers association”? It connotes that PEBA, or other bloggers associations, is not that awesome.

I asked him if I can reply regarding the manifesto the following day but Tonyo said he needs the suggestions pronto so he can share it with others.

After a few days, I was asked by other bloggers in Visayas and Mindanao why they were not informed about the creation of a National Bloggers Association. I asked Tonyo and he said he is going to Visayas and Mindanao to meet the group of bloggers there. I asked him to please make sure that no one will be left out.

I consulted this matter to several officers and volunteers of PEBA. Majority of them have reservations in joining. Aside from the questions above, here are some more questions from the group:

1. What is “national?” Where does PEBA fit in? What is the scope of the National Bloggers Association? PEBA represents the expats and OFWs. The title “national association” limits the reach of this group.

2. What are the guiding principles of the NBA? If it is “to unite the bloggers at a national level,” how can PEBA and other international Pinoy blogging organizations be integrated in its mission-vision?

3. Who will uphold the code of ethics that will be drafted and adapted? Who will say which is right or wrong? What will be our standards?

4. “We draw inspiration from and ask the participation of the city-wide, provincial, regional and island-wide associations, summits and conventions initiated by bloggers across the country.” Again, where is the international Filipino bloggers community here?

Our suggestions:

1. Do not use the word “national.” It connotes a limited scope where OFWs and expats are not included.
2. Organize regional blogs first.
3. From these regional groups, gather representatives that will create the NBA.
4. The group should not be used for political agenda.
5. Consider uniting the Filipino bloggers communities in the Philippines for the NBA first. The PEBA (and other international Filipino blogging communities) can become its partner. If the NBA has already solidified their stand, mission-vision, agenda, etc., then that’s when we consider the integration of both the national and international Filipino blogging communities.

A Prayer for OFWs

A Prayer for OFWs

Dear God,

You crossed every border between divinity and
humanity to make your home with us. Bless our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters
who have travelled to foreign lands with faith in their heart leaving their
families behind as they break through the barriers of people, cultures, and languages
to escape oppression and poverty.

There are
many things going on that are beyond us even with our collective power. We come
to thee in supplication and heartfelt pleadings as we are mindful of the ordeals
of others.

We thank thee for hearing the prayers of your
people as China grant reprieve to our three OFWs and may the Chinese government
grant a lesser penalty to their case.

We pray for the thousands of OFWs who were incarcerated
and imprisoned in the Middle East, Asia and other continents, may thou please grant
them the chance to get back to their families and find a new life, justice and
freedom as they entrust their lives into thy hands. May Thou enlighten our leaders
to put the plights of distressed OFWs as a priority and withdraw from plans to
cut the DFA social service and legal assistance funds.

We
pray to Thee that our OFWs in Taiwan will soon be reprieved of taking all the
heat of the current Taiwan-Philippines rift. May the government emissary would
soon find resolution to this issue so that those more than five thousand
scheduled for deployment will now be allowed to take on their jobs, and
the nearly a hundred thousand currently employed may keep their jobs and be
able to sustain their families. 

We pray that may Thou please keep our overseas
Filipinos safe in the escalating conflict in countries where democratic
renaissance in Muslim nations is unfolding from Morocco, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain
and Libya as they await the immediate repatriation efforts being taken by our
government agencies.

We pray for Thy protection
and guidance of the more than thirty thousand OFW’s in Libya. May their
families in the Philippines be freed from fear and worries of their condition
and that the OFWs safety is assured despite the worsening condition.

We
pray that may Thou save from harm our Filipino workers in war torn countries of
Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as OFWs in Nigeria, Somalia, Lebanon and Jordan,
who have taken great risks to continue their fight against poverty to support
their families in the Philippines despite of the work deployment ban imposed in
these countries.

We pray for the safety of the Filipino nurses trapped in the
rubbles during the earthquake in New Zealand, and the rest of the OFWs and
Expats around the world who are suffering from natural calamities, diseases and
injustices that they may find comfort through faith in Thee.

Hear our prayer Lord, to end the corruption that has
become the plague of our nation, to end poverty that afflicts and besets Thy
people, to end violence and war that displaces millions of our Filipinos from
their homes, which separate, divide and break families.

As we await for the signs of time when the Filipinos around
the world, the fathers and mothers brothers and sisters, and sons and daughters
may be reunited as one happy family.

We pray for Thine tender love and kind mercy, with our
faith, with our hope, with our love to thee, we pray for power greater than us
all, we pray for divine intervention.

PEBA, Inc, along with its 300+ KABLOGS, the RMN News Bantay OFW radio program
and the Blas Ople Policy Center and we are asking for your prayers or support

"When We Talk About Families, Is It Hard to Blog?"

I was asking this question for so many weeks that I finally let out and ask a fellow blogger and Kablogs - Pope of Palipasan. Below is his post from Palipasan, and asked for his permission for me to repost it here over Thoughtskoto. Thank you, The Pope. This one is inspiring. I like his reasons and his answer to the question. I added it her so someday, my daughter and posterity will have the chance to read it.

Pag Pamilya Ang Pinaguusapan, Mahirap Ba Mag-Blog?

 

Ating nakagisnan ang pamilya ay isang pangunahing balangkas ng isang lipunan. Ang pamilya ay aking unang guro at ang aming tahanan ay nagsilbing paaralan. Ang aking pamilya rin ang unang naging gabay upang makilala at mahalin ang Diyos na Lumikha at sa aking pamilya rin ang nabigyan ng halaga ang tinatawag na pagmamahal sa Diyos at sa kapwa.

At higit sa lahat, natagpuan ko ang himala ng Panginoon sa pagkakaloob Niya ng pinakamalaking biyaya, ang aking sariling pamilya sa pamamagitan ng aking asawa at supling na anak nagkaruon ng katuparan ang halaga ng buhay at ng aking pagkakalikha.

Subalit kung ganito kahalaga ang salitang pamilya sa bawa't Pilipino, tulad ko at ng halos 12 milyong Pilipino na nasa iba't ibang bahagi ng mundo, bakit ba kailangan pansamantalang iwanan ng isang ama, ina, o anak ang kanyang kaisa-isahang pamiya upang tahakin ang daan tungo pakikipagsalpalaran bilang isang banyaga.

Inaamin ko na hindi kayang tapatan ng salapi o materyal na bagay ang aking pagkakawalay sa aking pamilya sa maaring maging epekto nito sa kanila sa kasalukuyang lipunan na kanilang ginagalawan.

Subalit lubos akong naniniwala na sa tulong ng Maykapal, ng aking mga kamag-anak at kaibigan ay mapagtutulung tulungan namin ang mga hilahil ng buhay na kaugnay sa aking pagkakawalay sa aking pamilya at mapagtitibay namin ito sa pamamagitan ng pananampalataya, pagmamahalan at pagtitiwala sa isa't isa.

May ilang maling pag-aakala na ang pangingibang bayan ng isang OFW ay isang dahilan ng pagkasira ng pamilyang Pilipino. Sinasabi ko na hindi ang pagiging OFW ang sumisira sa pamilyang Pilipino, ang kawalan ng pananampalataya, pagmamahalan at pagtitiwala ang dahilan kung bakit tayo nagkakasala at nagbibigay daan upang masira ang pamilyang ating minsa'y pinahalagahan. Walang pinipiling lahi, edad, kasarian at lugar ang tukso upang sirain ang isang masayang pamilya.

Ang pangingibang bayan bilang OFW ay isa lamang sa napakaraming solusyon upang labanan ang kawalan ng trabaho, kahirapan at gutom sa ating bansa. Bagama't ang landas tungo sa pangingibang bayan ay puno ng hilahil, pagtitiis at sakripisyo alang-alang sa kinabukasan ng iniwang pamilya sa Pilipinas, ito ay isang marangal na hanapbuhay na nagbibigay pag-asa sa pag-abot ng mga pangarap ng pamilya.

Mahaba na pala ang aking natalakay ukol sa usaping pamilya. Kasi sa aking malayang pakikipagusap sa pamamagitan ng chat kay Mr. Thoughtskoto nuong makalawang araw ay nabuksan ang isang katanungan:

"Pag pamilya ang pinaguusapan, mahirap ba magblog?"

Walamg kagatol gatol na aking ibinulalas ang personal kong kasagutan na "hindi"(hindi mahirap lumikha ng panulat ukol sa sariling pamilya), subalit depende iyan kung gaano kahalaga ang pamilya sa isang manunulat.

Kung hahayaan ng isang blogista ang dikta ng kaisipan kung saan ang pagpapahalaga sa pamilya na tila musika na malayang tumutugtog sa kanyang kamalayan ay di alintana ang bawa't titik na idinidikta nito kasabay bawa't kumpas at pilantik ng mga daliri ng manunulat sa bawa't tikatik na tunog ng "keyboard" upang lumikha ng isang makabuluhang panulat ukol sa Pamilya ay naibabahagi nya ang isang kwento ng kanyang buhay sa pamamagitan ng blog at taas noo nya itong mailalahok sa PEBA 2010 bilang tugon sa adbokasiya tungo sa matibay na Pamilyang OFW at Pamilyang Pilipino.

Ako, bilang bahagi ng PEBA 2010 at isang blogista ay umaasa na sa mga makabuluhang panulat ng aking mga kababayan na lalahok sa patimpalak ng PEBA ay makapagbigay daan ito sa bawa't makababasa na kababayang Pilipino na may pamilya o kapamilyang OFW upang magbigay inspirasyon  na mapagtibay pamilyang Pilipino tungo sa matuwid na landas.

Ako rin ay umaasa, na sa pagbabahagi ng kwento ng buhay ng bawa't nominado sa PEBA 2010 ay haplusin nawa nito ang puso ng mga mapagparayang naninilbihan sa Pamahaang P-Noy at sa Konseho ng Kongreso at Senado na ipagsantabi ang personal na interes at sa halip bigyan na halaga ang tinig ng bawa't OFW at mga myembro ng pamilyang OFW para pagtibayin ang ang pamilyang OFW sa isang matibay na tahanang Pilipino tungo sa matibay na bansang Pilipino.

Ikaw kaibigan, pag pamilya ang pinaguusapan, mahirap ba magblog? Sana sumali ka sa PEBA 2010.

Gang Rape of Two Filipina in UAE, A Hoax?

I received a message from PEBA collegue, Pete from South Korea about this very gruesome, horrible and shockingly cruel video of purportedly a Filipina raped and slashed by two Middle Eastern man, a taxi driver and his friend. This is the actual message associated with the video.

"Please watch and let us HELP this Filipina, From a very reliable source, she was working in Abu Dhabi, UAE. this girl, together wid her filipina friend also was about to go home from a party. While on the taxi, the 2 felt asleep due to liquor. The driver called up his friends, he drove the car somewhere in the area and brutally raped the 2 girls. (gang rape)... "

I immediately asked KABLOGS and PEBA members from the UAE area, and with the same messages, they cannot confirm if this is true or not because of a news black-out but that there are emails circulating and confirming that this was really true.

Anyway, ABS-CBN and the Philippine Star also published a news story about this with the DFA saying this is untrue.

"MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine embassy in Abu Dhabi said yesterday the reported rape of two Filipinas behind a mall that was circulated via e-mail did not take place.

In a report submitted to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Ambassador Grace Relucio Princesa said the embassy investigated the reported rape of the two Filipinas behind the Marina Mall after a video of an unidentified woman with severe slash wounds was circulated via e-mail, allegedly identifying her as one of the rape victims.

The embassy said an e-mail message from a certain “Edward Enoc” was circulated among the members of the Filipino community last Feb. 22. Enoc’s e-mail alleged that one Filipina died while the other escaped and sought medical assistant from the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) hospital. She died a few days later.

The embassy dispatched an assistance-to-nationals (ATN) team to visit the SKMC, other hospitals, and the city morgue, which all said no such victims were brought in.

The ATN team then proceeded to the Shabeya and Mina police stations in Abu Dhabi to determine if there was any reported rape of two Filipinas but no such police incident report was recorded."

Also the National Newspaper of Abu Dhabi, UAE published a statement from the Philippine Embassy.

Anyway, with so much disinformation online, it is better to verify anything first, and to confirm. Let us also be responsible in spreading news and videos. Kagaya sa politics sa Pilipinas ngayon, ang daming misinformation, ang daming liar, sinungaling, bakak, tikalon, butigon, harami. Ang daming lengguwe. hehe

Hear Our Voice...

I have to add that image here.

That Juan DelaCruz especially drawn by the owner of the blog The Sandbox for PEBA reminds me always of the responsibility we all have to our country, to our fellowmen.

He said we can do all we want to that image, but just don't remove or change the thumb inked with red color because that is his stand in the coming election. Me and Azel for PEBA didn't removed that.

We respect the man.

I was also honestly touched.

What is my stand? Do I have to make a stand?

What difference will I make if I state my stand?

So I asked Nebz, PEBA's winner for this year, and an OFW advocate to draft his thoughts and expectations for the coming election. He made the flash images. Then I ask CM of the Dungeon (Palau) and George of Palipasan (Qatar), and Rio of Bisjoker (Afghanistan)the men behind KABLOGS. I also ask NJ, and the Pink Tarha Girls (Saudi bloggers).

This compilation of thoughts and ideas, serves as the Voice of KABLOGS and PEBA for this coming election.

"Let the new leaders of our land rise from the votes of the OFWs"

For decades, we've been lauded as "Bagong Bayani" as a recognition by the same government who has caused our mass exodus into foreign lands.

Let's breathe the title of modern day heroes and accept its appended challenges and responsibilities. Despite our distance and diversity, we take pride in being a part of the Filipino abroad’s global recognition as shapers of the world.

Now, the time has come to unleash the heroes within us as the majestic sun rises in the East and its rays of hope shines upon our nation this coming May 2010 election.

This is a call for our collective voice in the 2010 election. We encourage all Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families to actively participate and be part of our country’s historic electoral process.

For several years, we’ve made our presence felt in building our nation. In every single dollar remittance that is being delivered in our family’s doorsteps, we OFWs have helped in sustaining the Philippines’ economic growth.

Our experiences in and out the country have led us to become seasoned professionals who are now politically mature to discern what’s best for our home country. Now is the moment to make a difference. We are part of the 12 million Filipinos dispersed across the world and we can definitely make a difference.

We will solidify our stand to choose the right leaders fo

r our country. We will influence our family and loved ones back home, the recipient of our hardships and struggles abroad, to act too. We will guide them in making their choices this coming May 2010because we believe that their actions will not only shape our country’s future but the future of the generations to come.

Our nation has suffered from the action (and inaction) of irresponsible and corrupt government officials but we must remain steadfast in our hope and desire of having a better country. Our nation is already battered and divided. This coming election, its fate resides in US.

If there is a time to live as modern day heroes, to make a difference as global Filipinos, to embark on something worth doing, IT IS NOW!

Let us empower ourselves as OFWs. With one voice and one heart, let's vote and get counted! Only responsible voters can bring responsible leaders in office on May 2010.

Let the new leaders of our land rise from the votes of OFWs.

TAG ng Thoughtskoto Para Sayo (Pwede Pakalat?)

Pambihira, naunahan ako ni CM! In behalf of the Thoughtskoto Family and the PEBA team! A million thank you!

Parang kelan lang, nearly a year ago, nung naglaunch ako with the support ng wife ko ng project na ito, which later tinawag na Pinoy Expats/OFW Blog Awards or PEBA. By that time, nangangapa pa ako, nakakatakot subukan, ang hirap lalo pa’t limited ang time dahil pinaghahati ko ang aking time. Naiisisingit ko din kahit papaano, at one by one, may mga nagnominate na ng mga blogs. Iba ang criteria before, simple lang, kahit sino pwede magnominate, kahit kaninong blog pwede manominate. Mahigit 30 na blogs ang nanominate pero sa pre-requirements ko, na magdisplay ng banner ng project, 25 lang ang nakapasa. Some of the blogs na nanominate pero di naisama is Lea Salonga’s World of Manang. Nakakatuwa kasi pinagtawanan pa ng isang commenter na Pinoy na tagaUS  nung nagleave ako ng comment dun sa post ni Ms. Lea na kung pwede idisplay ang banner/badge ng project, nagkaroon kami ng palitan ng comment nung commenter sa Multiply, explaining the noble project na ito, tinawag pa akong nakikiride on sa popularity ni Lea Salonga at kung ano-ano pang panlalait. Bakit nga ba ang ibang Pinoy, nakatuntong lang ng tate, parang kung sino na? Hehe.

I have no choice but to drop Lea’s blog from the list of nominees, kung sino man nagnominate, sorry po. Walang kinikilingan eh. Meron pang prominenteng mga tao na nakalista, yung kay Reyna Elena, Kutserong Kuba at yung Kwentong Tambay ni Batjay. Pero nadedma ang nomination nila dahil nga walang display ng banner. I pushed through with the project though.

Marami pa akong comment na nareceive, may tunay na pasasalamat, meron ring ipokrito na nagagalit dahil gusto ko lang daw sumikat, honest suggestions, at meron ring mga tunay na kaibigan na tumutulong para maging maayos. August nagsimula, natapos ng December, at namanaged ko pong kumuha ng mga Judges na established na in the blogging world. Ang result, credible and successful 2008 Top 10 Pinoy Expats-OFW Blog Awards! Sa sampung nanalo, 6 ang expats, 4 ang OFW. Merong galing Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, America at Canada, ang galing ng pagkadistribute ng awards. I admire them. I admire these wonderful bloggers na in their own way nagserve as a voice and beckon of hope. 

Isa sa mga hinahangaan ko ay ang naging Number 1 sa Middle East na taga Saudi Arabia, si Blogusvox ng THE SANDBOX.

Wala pa kayong natanggap, except the recognition at blog banner pero salamat ng marami sa suporta at tiwala.

This year ang contest is more promising and exciting with the help ng mga tinatap ko na talentadong mga tao. marami akong gustong kunin na partner pero dahil mga blogger sila sa abroad, hinayaan ko na para makasali sila kasi gustong-gusto ko rin na manalo sila sa galing nilang magsulat, tumula, manghula, magdrawing ng mukha, at tumambling at magsplit at kung anu ano pang nakakatawa, nakakainspire at nakakaluhang kwento ng buhay sa ibang bansa. 

Iba ang tema, ibang criteria, pero the same na cause. Sabi nga sa launching entry ng PEBA;  “Any successful endeavor is worth repeating and much more sustained. Especially when it touches and inspires the lives of the people for whom it dedicates its toils, pain, and achievements. Such are the motivations for which the 2009 Top 10 Pinoy Expat/OFW Blog Award (PEBA) is once again being launched online.”

Eexplain ko later sa blog ko na ito at sa tatlo pang blog in tagalog kung paano ka nga ba makakasali at manominate, napaksimple, madali lang actually pero may botohan na mangyayari, at pre-judging tapos ang final judging na at awarding. Wala sa dami ng traffic or sa ganda ng lay-out nasa puso at isipan at sa gawa, teka parang Panatang Makabayan na yan ah. hehe
