Mining Company Massacres 15,000 Trees in Palawan Days After Gina Lopez Was Denied Approval

A mining firm felled thousands of trees in Brooke's Point town in Palawan province just days after former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez was rejected by the Commission on Appointments, a local official confirmed. The clearing covered more than 10 hectares of old growth forests in the town. "I don't have the exact figure but those were thousands of trees. They cut down big and small trees alike. Some of those were probably centuries old." Brooke's Point Mayor Jean Feliciano said in a phone interview. Feliciano said the trees were located in a protected area of Mount Mantalingajan, which also serves as a watershed that supplies potable water to 5 villages. The mining firm in question was identified as Ipilan Nickel Corporation, affiliate of Global Ferronickel Holdings, Inc. The company was granted a tree cutting permit in May 2016 but was cancelled in December. The company was among the mining firms that Lopez had ordered closed. Their ECC had already been canceled when they conducted the cutting operation. They don’t even have mayor’s and business permits,” Feliciano said. The provincial government is preparing to file illegal logging charges against the company and its officers. The Palawan government had previously filed charges against eight Ipilan Mining Corp. personnel involved in the tree cutting for violation of Republic Act No. 9175 (Chainsaw Act of 2002). They were able to arrest the eight chainsaw-wielding miners who mowed down the area but their companions had fled. The mining firm has since barred local officials, policemen and environment officials from entering the area. The town's mayor had to bring with her marines because the local police are afraid from threats of lawsuits filed against them. Lopez, for her part, took to social media to vent out her disdain over the "massacre" of the town's trees. Lawmakers earlier this month rejected the appointment of Lopez, who cracked down on alleged unsafe mining practices during her 10 months in office. She posted images of the aftermath on her Facebook account, showing the remnants of the cut down trees, including some timber that were left after the mining personnel fled from the scene. Her successor, Roy Cimatu, promised to investigate the logging activities in Brooke's Point. "I will immediately convene my staff and look into this immediately," Cimatu said in a separate interview. Global Ferronickel President Dante Bravo has issued a statement denying that its affiliate Ipilan Nickel, lacked the necessary special tree cutting permits and noted that the cancellation of the permit is still subject of a pending motion for reconsideration. added that the company also has an outstanding SEP (Strategic Environment Plan) clearance issued by the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development and a Mineral Production Sharing Agreement with the government. Provincial officials sought on Wednesday the cancellation of the company’s SEP Permit from the provincial regulatory body.

Gina Lopez Gave this Statement After She was Rejected by CA as DENR Secretary

Secretary Gina Lopez said the following during her interview after the Commission on Appointment rejected her as DENR Secretary.

"It is the constitutional right of every Filipino to have a a clean and healthy environment. I know how to eradicate poverty, ayan sana gusto kong gawin. At the end of the day, the Philippine Constitution is the premiere law of the country. You always talk about due process, but hey what about the rights of every Filipino people? All I'm saying they're going to make so much money from stockpiling. All I'm saying is give 2M for every magsasaka. What is wrong with giving 2M to the farmers? You should do it because that is the right thing to do. The 2M is for the farm lands. It is mandated in the constitution. It is the right of the DENR Secretary to ask that from you. I know there are laws and regulations, and I will follow the law but we decide how to navigate. The laws are not meant to be followed blindly! Why are you choosing which laws to follow? What about the farmers? What message are we showing here? That if you want to be confirmed as secretary you have to please them? 1/3 of the Filipinos depends on natural resources. Who suffers when you kill the environment? It's the poor! Because for you business and money is more important than people. This is not just my advocacy, but this is for all Filipinos to take care of the environment. Since politics is so unpredictable, I will do everything that I can for my policies. Which will bring on social justice. You can"t control the outcome. You have no control over politics. The most important thing for me is to be true. It's wrong when our lawmakers (some of them) serve the interest of others and not the people. You must know that it is in the Constitution, ang karapatan ng bawat Pilipino. My message to whoever will take my place, remember and safeguard the Constitution. This is not my country. This is our country! Are you small? No, because you have God inside you." -DENR Secretary Gina Lopez after the rejection from the Commission on Appointment.

Todays News That Will Definitely Revive Your Trust to the Government

People's trust to the Philippine government seems to be long gone during the past administrations. When you mention public officials: they think about politicians who feed on government taxes, when you talk about the policemen: they think about scalawags or criminals in uniform, and when you said government projects: they perceive corruption. But recent developments regarding the present administration of President Rodrigo Duterte might bring back the trust of the Filipino people to the Philippine government. 1. Approval of the Death Penalty Bill for drug-related crimes. Drug-related crimes has been terrorizing our community for quite long and the culprits seem not afraid of the authorities. With the approval of the death penalty bill that will penalize these kind of crimes, a cloud of fear must me wobbling over their heads now.
