New OFW Destination: Russia and China! Check Here for the List of POEA Approved Jobs

This is a good news for Filipinos who want to work abroad or to become Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said that aside from the countries in the Middle East there are new countries emerging as OFW destination.

This is a good news for Filipinos who want to work abroad or to become Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said that aside from the countries in the Middle East there are new countries emerging as OFW destination. According to POEA head Bernard Olalia, Russia and China are just some of the promising destination for OFWs. Upon checking on POEA job database, indeed there are many open vacancies for teachers who want to work in China. Particularly the People's Republic of China is hiring Filipino workers to work as economics teachers, English teachers, physics teachers and kindergarten teachers this April. Also, the country is hiring for waiter and waitress. (Please refer to job listing below ). On the other hand, Russia has already started hiring Filipino workers to work as engineers, foreman, cook, inspector and many others (see job order from POEA below). Aside from the two countries, the Czech Republic and San Marino are also negotiating labor deals according to Olalia. While Japan and South Korea are expected to place more job orders in the Philippines due to its aging population. Hong Kong is another country where Filipinos can work in the technology sector. The Canadian government will no longer accept an application for permanent residency from caregivers starting November 2019. Because of this, applicants to the program including many Filipino caregivers are unhappy with the news. The Philippines is among the top source of Canada's caregiver. With this, Canada's Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Department assured caregivers that there is and will always be a pathway for them to apply for permanent residency. Just this year, the Canadian government announced its target to bring 310,000 new immigrants including new caregivers and economic class workers. They also assured caregivers they will eliminate or reduce the backlog in the processing of permanent residency application. Caregivers who have work experience in Canada caring for people with high medical needs may apply for permanent residence through the Caring for People with High Medical Needs Program. But this program will come to an end on November 29, 2019. That means eligible applicants will have a more than a year to apply for the program before the said date. To be eligible to apply, a two years full-time work experience as a caregiver is number one requirement. But according to Filipino caregiver Margie Lingbaoan, she applied for permanent residency in 2013 but until now she is still waiting for the approval and have no idea about the status of her application in immigration. On the other hand, Connie Sorio, coordinator of KAIROS Migrants Justice and Asia Partnership believes that Filipino caregivers will look for other countries as an option if Canada will end the permanent residency opportunity. She added the country is very cold and very far from the Philippines. Sorio said the only reason why many caregivers are coming to Canada because of the residency opportunity.

Saudi Bans Expats From These Jobs; Oman Implements Six-Month Ban on Hiring Expats

The Middle East labor market has taken another turn for the worse for prospective foregin applicants. Saudi Arabia and Oman has set new restrictions on foreign nationals looking for work in these oil rich region. In a bid to stem the growing number of unemployment among locals, countries in the region are tightening the rules and limiting the vacancies available for expats. Minister of Labor and Social Development Ali Al-Ghafees has issued a decree to limit work in 12 new activities to Saudi men and women starting September 2018. The 12 work areas banned for expats are: watch shops, optical stores, medical equipment stores, electrical and electronics shops, outlets selling car spare part, building material shops, outlets selling all types of carpets, automobile and mobike shops, shops selling home furniture and ready-made office material, sale outlets of ready-made garments, children clothes and men’s supplies, household utensils shops and pastry shops. Oman's Minister of Manpower, Abdullah bin Nasser Al Bakri has issued Ministerial Decree 2018/38 last Sunday, imposing a six-month ban on hiring foreigners seeking work in 10 different industries. The ban includes jobs in the following sector: IT media air traffic management engineering accounting and finance technicians insurance marketing and sales administration and human resources According to minister Abdullah Al Bakri, the new ban, implemented immediately, aims to increase the employment rate among nationals. The hiring freeze “would help companies to create vacancies for Omanis who are looking for jobs,” he said. According to the Ministry of Manpower, there were nearly 60,000 unemployed university graduates in 2017 - the country's worst job crisis in 40 years. The ban affects 87 different job types across ten job sectors.
