Internet Voice and Video Calling Apps Is Now Unblocked in Saudi Arabia?

It was about four years ago when the Saudi government started blocking messaging, voice and video calling apps from the country. Viber, Skype, Whats App and Facebook Messenger are just some of the popular mobile and PC applications partially or fully blocked by the Communications and Information Technology Commission. The Saudi government wanted these apps to have a local server in the Kingdom, where the government can monitor all communications passing through these apps. But a surprising news came from Saudi Arabia recently. Internet voice and video calling apps such as Skype, Viber and WhatsApp will be allowed to work fully in Saudi Arabia starting from Wednesday next week! The Communications and Information Technology Commission and telecommunications service providers are currently in discussions to enable everyone to benefit from applications that provide voice and video communications over the Internet. The cooperating bodies had confirmed their commitment to enable all users to use applications to make voice and video calls of the highest quality provided all applications are reviewed periodically. Abdullah bin Amer Al-Sawahah, the minister of Communications and Information Technology, thanked the parties involved in the talks for developing their technologies in line with the latest trends in the ICT sector and providing the best services to users. “This fruitful cooperation between the Kingdom’s telecoms partners comes under the umbrella of ‘Customer First,’ a policy in which everyone works in order to give all telecom subscribers in the Kingdom the best services that meet their expectations and satisfy their needs,” he said. Spreading Fake News Can Land You 6 Months Jail-time and ₱200K Penalty

President Duterte signed into law this week Republic Act 10951, or the Amendment to the Revised Penal Code. The new law includes a provision imposing penalties on a person found guilty of spreading fake news that might affect public order. With the prevalence of fake news from all sides of the political and social spectrum, Duterte signed the law that amended the 87-year-old Revised Penal Code that also placed penalties on unlawful use of publication and unlawful spoken statements. Article 154, Section 18 of the act provides a penalty of arresto mayor - that's one month and one day up to six months in prison. Included in the penalty is a fine ranging from P40,000 to P200,000. The penalty used to be only ₱200 to ₱1,000 only. The punishment may be imposed against any person who by means of print, lithography or any other methods of publication shall publish or cause to be published as news any "false report that might endanger public order or damage the interest or credit of the state." The statement "other methods of publication" could also mean online publications. A majority of fake news nowadays is spread online via social media sites, web pages and video streaming. The law also covers any person who shall maliciously publish, or cause to be published any official resolution or document without proper authority or before they have been published officially. This means leaking of government documents will merit penalties of prison sentence and fine. The printing, or causing to print, and the distribution of published or distributed books, pamphlets, periodicals or leaflets which do not bear the real printer’s name, or which are classified as anonymous is also punishable under RA 10951. The measure will take effect 15 days after its publication in at least two major newspapers. Watch: Riyadh Police Arrest Abusive Saudi Prince on King Salman's Order

Riyadh Police have arrested a member of the Saudi royal family who abused citizens verbally and physically in a widely spread video that went viral over the past few days. Many Saudis celebrated the news on social media as they shared leaked videos (as seen above) of what seems to be the arrest of Prince Saud bin Abdulaziz bin Musaed bin Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Others are praising the monarch for his strict and apparent equal treatment, regardless of birthright. One tweet shows the prince being "booked" at the local police station. It has been shared more than a hundred times. The tweet translates ""#Salman_TheStrict_Jails_ThePrince That's the face of the villain after he was arrested. Abu Fahd (King Salman's nickname) does not discriminate between a prince and a citizen, they are all equal. God give him strength." The arrest came at the orders of Saudi King Salman who issued an immediate warrant for Prince Saud and the imprisonment of all those involved in abusive behavior towards citizens. The arrest order may have been brought about by disturbing footage showing abusive actions committed by Prince Saud and a number of associates that were widely spread and have triggered angry reactions. The Saudi king's order instructs that all of the accused must be held in prison until the testimonies of all the victims as well as the accused men are heard. A court ruling must also be issued swiftly. The king's orders pointed out that the law must apply to everyone, and that equal protection of the law is granted to all, regardless of their status. This is not the first time that a legal proceeding and verdict is swiftly and publicly taken against a member of the Saudi royal family. Last October, Prince Turki bin Saud bin Turki bin Saud Al-Kabeer was beheaded in Riyadh for the murder of Adel bin Suleiman bin Abdulkareem Al-Muhaimeed, a fellow Saudi citizen.

In UAE,creating or using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) fraudulently can land you in jail and pay AED2,000 to AED2,000,000.

Yes,you read it right and it is actually included in the new series of federal laws on IT crimes.

Article 1 provides for replacing the text of Article 9 of Federal Law No. 9/2012 as follows:

Whoever uses a fraudulent computer network protocol address (IP address) by using a false address or a third-party address by any other means for the purpose of committing a crime or preventing its discovery, shall be punished by temporary imprisonment and a fine of no less than Dh500,000 and not exceeding Dh2,000,000, or either of these two penalties.

VPN passthrough, allows you to connect to a secure VPN server or a secured private network and hide your actual location which is considered as a fraudulent use of an IP address.

Some apps like viber,snapchat,whatsapp,which are messaging and voice apps and are used by the expats to communicate with their families in their home countries for free are inaccessible in the region.People use VPNs to acces these apps so that they dont need to use expensive services offered by the local Telcos.

In Saudi Arabia, Latest News is You Can Get 25% Money Reward if you Report Violation;

Meanwhile, Ministry of Labor law in Saudi Arabian Government is giving rewards to anyone who will report Saudization violations,especially in the IT sector.The amount equal to 25% of the actual fine will be rewarded to the informant as announced by Labor and Social Development Minister Mufrej Al-Haqabani.

The ministry will conduct "community inspections" allowing every individual to report Saudization violations.
This is in accordance with the 100% Saudization goal for the IT Sector starting on September.

Haqabani said that young Saudis has proven their ability in the IT sector and that they are the source of pride and their participation in the IT market is fantastic and professional and the young Saudi IT's proved that they are capable of doing such tasks.

Saudization aims to give jobs to locals including Saudi women,improve working environment and reduce unemployment rate in the Kingdom.

We hope they will also check Saudi violations for expats, including those expats who has no private health insurance.
