Diabetes: Causes, Symptoms, Prevention

Filipinos are fond of sweets. As a matter of fact, wherever you go, there are sweet delicacies in every region. Does Filipino sweet tooth equate to diabetes?   Last year, the Philippine Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism (PSEDM) stated that the estimated number of diabetics in the Philippines was at 7.3 million making the country a diabetes hotspot. There are about 500 Filipinos being diagnosed to have diabetes everyday.  Diabetes mellitus is a silent killer. Most diabetes patient die of kidney or heart failure due to complications from undiagnosed diabetes.  Many people has it but they are not aware until they had been diagnosed. The symptoms are also hardly noticeable and could be mistaken for other diseases. It is also hereditary in nature, hence, people with history of the disease in the family is advised to have a check-up just to make sure. In type 1 diabetes (T1D) which affects 10% of the diabetes patients, the pancreas which is producing insulin is not properly doing its job.
