“Who is he? I am the president of a sovereign state and we have long ceased to be a colony.  I only am answerable to the Filipino people who elected me as president.”

"If you remove me because of the killings, then so be it. I do not want to make quarrel with Obama. But I certainly do not want to get beholden to anybody except to the Filipino people who elected me. Philippines is an independent country.

If other leader would try to lecture me about the internal affairs of this country, don't do that. Magka babuyan tayo. Philippines might be a small country, but we are independent. We (leaders) are supposed to be equal there.

I am not beholden to anybody except to the Filipino people."

Here is the US President Barack Obama's response.

"I have seen some of those colorful statements in the past. Clearly he’s a colorful guy. Obviously the Filipino people are some of our closest friends and allies, the Philippines is a treaty ally of ours, but I always want to make sure if I’m having a meeting that it’s actually productive and we’re getting something done.”

"The issue of how we approach fighting crime and drug trafficking is a serious one for all of us. We've got to do it the right way, Undoubtedly, if and when we have a meeting, this is something that's going to be brought up. And my expectation, my hope, is that it could be dealt with constructively."
