TESDA will conduct free training for surrendering drug dependents through a barangay-based scholarship program. This is in response to President Rodrigo Duterte's directive to give rehabilitation and special skills training to thousands of surrendered drug dependents to prevent them from going back to their bad habit of doing drugs especially those who are residing in poor barangays.
According to TESDA Director General Guiling Mamondiong, they already coordinated with the barangay officials to submit the list of drug dependents.
PNP data shows that surrendering drug dependents reached to over 700,000 but the government is expecting it to turn out up to 1.2 million.TESDA also plan to bring the funds directly to the barangays to benefit the poor and not only those who are connected to some politicians. In the old scholarship system, the schools will choose the scholars according to the recommendation of the mayor, the governor or other local officials.
