However, there are hackers or criminals who uses a Facebook account to gather personal information or to stalk other people for their personal gain. So be careful when you accept friends request in Facebook from people you do not know. You may not know you are adding a stalker, a pedophile or a theft that is waiting to victimize you or your home through your information on Facebook.Here are 10 ways to avoid being hacked on Facebook and stay safe.  1. 1. CREATE A STRONG PASSWORD



Here is the characteristic of a strong password:

  • At least 8 characters in length, but the longer, the better.
  • The shorter password, the easier to hack

  • Should NOT contain your name, birthday, pets or common words
  • Make it difficult to guess




2. DO NOT USE YOUR FACEBOOK PASSWORD ANYWHERE ELSE



Many of us are using same password for every social media account like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, even with our email such as Yahoo, Gmail, etc. We are guilty of this because we do not want to forget our password so we make it all the same.



Remember, never use the same password more than once. Ensure that you create a different password for every social media account or email.






3. CHANGE YOUR FB PASSWORD ONCE EVERY 6 MONTHS

This is not just applicable to your Facebook account but goes for all your social media account and emails. Changing password once in a while is a one way to secure and prevent criminals from hacking your account. Also, make sure you do not share it with anyone.



4. ENABLE LOGIN NOTIFICATION



Whenever any body or a hacker tries to log in your User ID and Password, you will receive a notification on your cell phone. This time you have to change your password immediately because hacker got your password and trying to log in in your Facebook Account. 



To Enable Login Notification 

Go to Home -> Account Settings -> Security -> Login Notification. Put a Check Mark on your preferred option and click Save Changes button.

5. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ACTIVE SESSIONS



If you notice any unfamiliar location or device, it means your Facebook Account is at risk. Just click on End Activity and do not forget to change your password after that. 



To Check Active Sessions

Go to Home -> Account Settings -> Security -> Active Sessions. 

6. ENABLE SECURE BROWSING 

This Facebook feature helps you to make your account more secure.

7. DON'T FRIEND EVERYONE

You should be careful in accepting friends request from people whom you do not know. You may be adding scammers, a hacker, or a thief who is waiting to view your details and use it to crack your password. They may even break into your home when you are away especially when your complete address is visible in your profile. 

Do not friend everyone. Avoid the person who doesn’t even have a profile pic. If you haven’t met them, be cautious.

8. BE SUSPICIOUS OF YOUR MESSAGES

Do not open or forward suspicious looking messages sent to you inbox. It may be a spam or links contain phishing emails that ask you to log-in or provide bank details. Phishing scams are attempts by scammers to trick you into giving out personal information such as your bank account numbers, passwords, and credit card numbers.

Do not respond to Facebook message from someone you do not know. Especially if that person is asking for a personal information.

8. WATCH WHAT WIFI YOU CONNECT TO

Set a strong password for your home Wi-Fi and make sure only you and your family knows it. When going out, never use a hotspot that may be insecure. Do not do your online banking or anything sensitive on a public Wi-Fi network.




10. ALWAYS LOG OUT!



Log out your Facebook account when your finished even in your phone.



If you don't log out, Facebook will use your "login cookie" to track your activities across the whole World Wide Web.


If someone else accesses your computer or your phone, and you have not logged out of your Facebook account, they will be able to read your private messages, scam other people using your account and change your privacy settings.



Remember what goes online stays online so never say anything that could hurt, anger or endanger yourself or someone else.
