Duterte about the arrest of Nader Essam Assaf, a Lebanese national, who together with his wife, Mona, a Syrian national, are tagged principal suspects in the brutal torture and murder of the 29-year-old domestic helper from Sara, Iloilo. “The President welcomes the news that Nader Essam Assaf is now in the hands of authorities in Lebanon,” Cayetano said in a statement. “Assaf’s arrest is a critical first step in our quest for justice for Joanna and we are thankful to our friends in Kuwait and Lebanon for their assistance.” The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait reported the arrest of Assaf to Manila the same day the chief executive visited the wake of Demefelis and assured her family that the goverment will seek justice for her and other OFWs abused by their employers abroad. Syrian authorities have arrested the second suspect in the brutal murder of overseas Filipino worker Joanna Demafelis, the Department of Foreign Affairs said. "We have just been informed by the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait that Mona Hassoun, wife of Nader Essam Assaf, who are the principal suspects in the murder of our kababayan Joanna Demafelis, is now in custody of authorities in Damascus," Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said. The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait reported the arrest of Assaf to Manila the same day the chief executive visited the wake of Demafelis and assured her family that the goverment will seek justice for her and other OFWs abused by their employers abroad.
Syrian authorities had also arrested Hassoun in Damascus, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
According to the report, the couple admitted the crime and said that Demafelis was still alive when they left her inside the freezer. The couple will be facing death by hanging if proven guilty under Kuwait justice system.
The death of Demafelis together with many previous cases of maltreatment and abuse to Filipino household workers ,some resulted in death, has triggered the total deployment ban of OFWs in Kuwait.
