According to Healthline, blueberries are so rich in nutrients that is why these are often labeled as a “superfood”.

“Often labeled a superfood, they are low in calories and incredibly good for you…. Blueberries are incredibly healthy and nutritious. They boost your heart health, brain function and numerous other aspects of your body,” it said.

Here are some of the reasons why you should eat blueberries:

1. Low in calories
Blueberries are low in calories but high in fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin K.

2. Lower blood pressure
Blueberries were found to have significant benefits for people with high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease.

3. Reduce risk of heart attacks
A study  found that those with the highest intake of anthocyanins—the main antioxidants in blueberries—were at a 32 percent lower risk of heart attacks compared to those with the lowest intake.

4. Prevent aging, cancer
Blueberries reduce DNA damage, protecting a person from aging and cancer. To note, DNA damage is part of the reason we grow older and plays a big role in the development of diseases like cancer.

“Because blueberries are high in antioxidants, they can neutralize some of the free radicals that damage your DNA,” it was noted.

5. Fight UTIs
Because blueberries are closely related to cranberries, which are widely known to help prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), these fruits boast many of the same active substances as cranberry juice.

Like cranberries, blueberries contain substances that can prevent certain bacteria from binding to the wall of the bladder, which helps prevent UTIs.

6. Have anti-diabetes effects
A research suggests that anthocyanins in blueberries have beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. These anti-diabetes effects occur with both blueberry juice and extract.

7. Reduce muscle damage
A study found that blueberries may aid muscle recovery after strenuous exercise.
