Involvement in illegal drugs. This is the common reasons why Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are arrested in the United Arab Emirates. According to Vice Consul Von Ryan Pangwi, head of the Philippine Embassy's Assistance to Nationals (ATN) section that in Abu Dhabi, there are around 27 OFWs imprisoned and the common reason is their involvement in drugs. Next to drugs are cases of theft and unpaid loans. With this Pangwi is asking OFWs in UAE to stay away from drugs or other illegal activities that may land them in jail. He explains that drugs are a serious case in UAE and that investigation alone may take six months. During this period OFWs will stay in jail and the whole process depends on the severity of the case. If the OFWs are found guilty, they will be deported only after serving their sentence. Aside from drugs, theft and unpaid loans, there are OFWs in UAE who commit minor violation such as jaywalking, drunk driving among others that land them in jail and only release if fines are being paid.
