The Japanese government announced that the country will accept more than half a million foreign workers to address the labor shortage. The Japanese government decision to welcome more than 500,000 foreign workers will push through under fiscal 2025. Due to the labor shortage, five industries are the most affected — agriculture, construction, lodging, nursing, and shipbuilding. Under the plan, foreign workers will be allowed to stay in Japan for five years. They will be required to pass a test demonstrating proficiency in the relevant field and the Japanese language. Those who go through the country's foreign trainee program will be exempt from the test and can stay for a total of 10 years. It is reiterated in the framework that there will be a five-year limit to every foreign worker in Japan. Bringing family members with them is also not allowed. Companies that hire foreign workers will be required to submit a plan of support that includes assisting the workers to find housing and take language classes. Small businesses will be able to ask a government-certified organization for help. Around 12 percent of 1.28 million foreigners working in Japan is from the Philippines while 29 percent were from China, followed by 19 percent from Vietnam, then the Philippines. There are also foreign workers from Brazil and Nepal. Meanwhile, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said that Japan is now hiring for hundreds of nurses and caregivers. According to the POEA, 150 nurses and 720 caretakers are now needed in Japan. Nurses in Japan is earning as much as P42,000 to P83, 000 while P48,000 to P96,000 per month for caregivers.
