Isang bagong strain ng coronavirus ang nakita kamakailan sa Pilipinas at pinaniniwalaang mas nakahahawa ito kaysa sa unang klase ng virus na nakapasok sa bansa.

Ayon sa unang SARS-CoV-2 bulletin na inilabas kamakailan ng Philippine Genome Center (PGC), ang presensya ng D614G o ng “G” variant--na itinuturing na “globally dominant form of SARS-CoV-2”--ay nakita kamakailan sa isang small sample ng positive cases mula sa Quezon City.
“Together with the observation that G614 is now the dominant viral state, the authors claim that the said mutation can increase the viral rate of transmission,” saad ng PGC.

Wika ng infectious diseases expert na si Dr. Edsel Salvana, ang pagtaas ng bilang ng apektado ng virus noong nakaraang Hulyo ay maaaring bunsod na rin kahit papaano ng G variant; bagama't hindi pa ito namamataan sa anumang sample na nasa bansa.
“The D614G mutation makes the virus more infectious....It can spread faster and overwhelm our healthcare system if we don't double our control efforts and so it can lead to a higher number of overall deaths,” aniya.
Naobserbahan din kamakailan ng mga researcher sa Scripps Research, United States na ang G variant ang dahilan ng "increased number of spikes that characterize SARS-CoV-2".
Gayunman, masyado pa raw maaga para sabihin na mas madaling nakahahawa ang bagong strain na ito.
“However, there is still no definitive evidence showing that carriers of the G614 variant are actually more transmissible… and the mutation does not appear to substantially affect clinical outcomes as well,” paliwanag ng grupo ng eksperto. “Nevertheless, considering the presently wide geographic spread of G614, continuous monitoring of the said mutation… must be done in order to better understand the evolutionary trajectory of SARS-CoV-2 to inform containment, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies."
