Tanim-Bala, Still Alive At NAIA?

The most notorious modus victimizing the passengers especially the overseas Filipino workers (OFW) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport  (NAIA) aside from baggage pilferage is the bullet planting or "tanim-bala" where the suspects deliberately slide-in a bullet on passengers baggage without the knowledge of the baggage owner. During the x-ray baggage check, with the passenger totally unaware of it, the bullet will be found at the baggage and the poor passenger will be held under the airport security unless they will give something in exchange of not being offloaded. In many cases, the victims were offloaded and not able to board their flights on time and they end up spending more on their flight rebookings aside from being asked to pay for the fine for illegally carrying an ammunition.
After last years tanim-bala issues, people who are bound to use the airport became conscious and careful, wrapping their every baggage with layers of plastic wrap to prevent the scammers from planting bullets into their luggage.

NBI Warns Online Shoppers Who Are Paying Through Remittance Centers

Many people nowadays avail the comfort of online shopping.
It is convenient and practical. You can even find the best deal for the items you buy. But unlike any transaction you are making online, it is vulnerable to online scammers. Everyone has to be more cautious in dealing with online sellers who do not do meet-ups and collecting payments through remittance centers and promising to send your items via shipping. You might not get the exact item you are ordering or worse, you might never get it at all after sending your payment.

Advertisement Sponsored Links Steph Ang, 17, decided to buy a camera online as a birthday gift to her friend. She came across a seller named "Fatima Bautista" and made a purchase on April 10. Five weeks after she sent her payment amounting to P2,700, the item was not delivered and the said online seller cannot be contacted anymore. She sought the help of a radio program "Lingkod Kapamilya" at DZMM to run after the online scammer who is hiding in a social media identity "Fatima". Steph, after sending her a private message, she found out that the seller's location is at Ilagan City, Isabela and she agreed to send the item via shipping and send the payment ahead through a remittance center. She did not have any doubt on the seller since it is a trusted social media group with legit sellers. Ang also is used to making online transactions as she is also a reseller online. She then agreed to send the money under the name "Angelo Mabad" whom the seller said, is her boyfriend. After 3 days, Ang made a follow-up about the status of her order but there was no answer from the seller. She cannot even tag her on their social media group. That's when she realized that she got victimized by a scam. According to Agent Victor Lorenzo of the National Bureau of Investigation Digital Forensic Laboratory (NBI-DFL), there are several ways to go after the suspect. They can verify where the money was claimed and who claimed it because the suspect most probably provided an identification when he/she claimed the money. Scammers also usually stay in their "comfort area" or hide-out which is usually near money remittance centers. Lorenzo also warned the public not to confirm or say yes in sending money as scammers usually lie about their real location. You should also check if the social media account was just recently created. Meet-ups are always the best way to transact with online sellers rather than do shipping deal. The minimum security requirements of remittance centers, which is an identification card are being used by the scammers to victimize their preys. In doing meet-ups, you should make sure that it is in a secured aand crowded area. READ MORE: It's More Deadly In The Philippines? Beware of Scammers Taking Advantage of the Popularity of Japan Job Opportunities

BEWARE! Some scammers are taking advantage of the popularity of job opportunities to Japan. Sixty OFWs who are supposed to travel to work in Japan has been victimized by a fraudulent travel agency in Davao City. Their tickets was booked on January 5 but the owner of Double A Travel Agency, Arlyn Llurca Palantar failed to provide the payment ,thus, the 60 OFWs could not travel to Japan for their deployment. The travel agency owner got away with over P800,000 from the victims. Double A Travel Agency was located at Door 6, Doña Segunda Building, Davao City but when the victims went there with the police, it was already closed down. Alvin Zulueta, one of the scammed passengers, said they were supposed to fly from Davao City to Manila on January 6 at 9:20 a.m. and from Manila to Narita, Japan at 2:50 p.m. but they found out at the airport that their flight was not booked. Zulueta Said that they were doing transaction with the same travel agency before and it is the first time that it happened. The police investigation found out that the travel agency's accreditation with Department of Tourism was expired since 2015. Meanwhile, OFW remittances from Japan increased by 11.5 percent in 2016 to reach $1.4 billion, comprising 5.1 percent of the total remittances of $26.9 billion for the year, after dropping 14 % on the previous year, according to the Philippine Central Bank data. “Since remittances are reported in US dollars, remittances from Japan when converted to US dollars increase as the yen appreciates,” Rosabel B. Guerrero, the director of the Central Bank’s department of statistics said. “Another factor that could contribute to higher remittances is the increase in the number of overseas Filipinos remitting to the Philippines,” Guerrero added. A steady increase of Filipino workers in Japan has been recorded annually from 2010 to 2015, but the government tally of the total numbers are yet to be completed. According to Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), the number of Filipinos working in Japan increased 10.5 percent in 2015, despite accounting only for 1 percent of the recorded total deployment. “The increase in deployment could be due to increasing demand for foreign workers to fill in the labor shortage,” Guerrero added, citing reports that Japan is looking to fill in more jobs through hiring foreign labor force including OFWs. In 2016, remittances from Japan ranked as the second largest remittance to the Philippines by workers in Asian countries, surpassed only by those from Singapore, where remittances reached a total of $1.7 billion. Remittances from the United States were highest at $8.9 billion, followed by Saudi Arabia at $2.6 billion and the United Arab Emirates at $2.2 billion.

OEC,"BALIK-MANGGAGAWA" APPOINTMENT AND PRINTING "BUSINESS" VICTIMIZING OFWS

A shop near DFA Regional Office in Pampanga has ventured into a new "business", charging OFWs who want to make "balik manggagawa" online appointment or print their OEC. A facebook user who is a fellow OFW posted about the abusive practice of some shops near DFA offices, taking advantage of the OFWs especially those who are not adept in using computers and not well-versed in internet navigation. He is trying to call on the attention of POEA Ortigas to act by providing a small place with a computer and a personnel to assist OFWs to avoid being victimized by some greedy business people. The impression of other people about OFWs are people with lots of money but they should understand that not all OFWs are rich, most of the OFWs especially the Household Service Workers has only enough salary for their day-to-day expenditures. POEA must do something to address this issue. By doing it, they can help thousands of OFWs and families by preventing them from falling victim to the scammers around.
