The National Society Of Human Rights (NSHR) announced in a tweet from their official Twitter account that anyone who harms anyone through the use of social media could be criminally liable and will be subjected to imprisonment of not more than a year and will be ordered to pay a fine up to SR500,000 The president of NSHR,Mufleh Al-Qahtani, explained that as part of its duty to disseminate the culture of human rights throughout the community and to encourage people to abide by the law, the society publishes booklets and posts tweets to educate and familiarize Saudis with the consequences of their actions and the crimes that they might commit without their knowledge. Al-Qahtani said that the popularity of social media, especially among young people, coincided with the emergence of various crimes committed using these means. “This entailed the enactment of the Anti-Cyber Crimes Law under a royal decree in 1428,”says Al-Qatani. advertisement The NSHR earlier twitted the relevant prison punishment of not more than a year and the payment of a fine of SR500,000 as possible punishments for any person who invades the private life of others by using their mobile phone camera abusively, bullying and defaming others or by harming them through social media . Meanwhile a certain A.Khaliq A.Jabbar's comment has drawn my attention on the Arab News article about this issue and it reads: "When employers abuse their maids, why there is no such huge fines? Where go human rights at that time?"

“This entailed the enactment of the Anti-Cyber Crimes Law under a royal decree in 1428,”says Al-Qatani.

The anti-cybercrime law in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia involves various offenses. These include spying,
interception of data transmitted through an information network without authorization,
unlawful access to computers with the intention of threatening or engaging in blackmail,
unlawful access to a website or hacking with the intent of changing design,
destroying or modifying websites,
invasion of privacy through the misuse of camera-equipped mobile phones and defamation
and infliction of damage on others through the misuse of information.

The NSHR earlier twitted the relevant prison punishment of not more than a year and the payment of a fine of SR500,000 as possible punishments for any person who invades the private life of others by using their mobile phone camera abusively, bullying and defaming others or by harming them through social media .

ARE YOU A REGISTERED VOTER? COMELEC ADVISED TO ALL: CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD AND DATA INFO'S ASAP!C

Commission on Elections or Comelec said sorry to all registered voters and those who were registered in previous elections with names and sensitive informations including passport number and fingerprint that may be vulnerable to use for some illegal activities.

The names said to be numbering between 55M to 70M registered infos that hackers took from the Comelec database and dumped to a searchable website entitled, "Philippines, we have your data" The Comelec asked the help of NBI to take down the website and it is still searchable and visible as of Thursday.
advertisement
The Comelec advised all registered voters to change their email passwords and other vital infos to prevent misuse of their privacy.
"Tayong lahat po. Palitan email addresses and passwords;
contact credit card company to tell them maaring damay kayo"

advertisement
The website "Philippines, we have your data" said in a statement at the opening of the website.

"ATTENTION: there is no any passport information, no documents, etc. There is just personal data from the previously leaked by LulzSecPinas Comelec database. We have no responsibility and don't give any warranty of leaked data's accuracy - we have just extracted it from the dump."

What is this all about?
As you know (or don't know), recently LulzSec Pilipinas have hacked comelec.ph. They have dumped the database of about 70 million of Philippines voters and have published all the data at archive.org. The database contains a lot of sensitive information, including fingerprint data and passport information. So, we thought that it would be fun to make a search engine over that data.

Why are we doing this?

For lulz. Hackers just hack and download data from websites but we make it accessible for anyone. It's one thing to hear news about a huge data leak and another to is see your data in a public website. Maybe, at least now, government will start thinking about security of citizens' personal data.

PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION

  1. CHANGE EMAIL ADDRESS PASSWORDS
  2. CHANGE PIN CODES IN ATM
  3. ENABLE TWO WAY OR PHONE AUTHENTICATION OF YOUR CREDIT CARDS AND BANK TRANSACTIONS
  4. PASSPORTS AND OTHERS DATA MAY ALSO BE RENEWED FOR SECURITY REASON

Cyber Crime Law In The Middle East

Do you remember that Kenyan foreign worker in Saudi Arabia who was jailed after he was caught chatting with a woman in Facebook. His mobile/cellphone was also confiscated and they found pictures of that woman he was chatting with.

We also have Raif Badawi, a blogger and a Saudi national who had been sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1000 lashes for his blog posts.

We really don't know the rules in Saudi Arabia for the use of internet or social media. But recently we also found out that the ministry has opened its own website to accept reports of harmful comments posted in the internet. It says "This service allows reporting harmful electronic comments on internet blogs".

In a recent court ruling in UAE's Supreme Court, a man was fined for $800 after swearing at a colleague over an instant messaging application. Wherein the claimant presented his phone as proof of the insulting words he received from the accused.

We can also recall what happened few months ago, when an American was jailed, fined and faced with possible deportation after he posted something on his Facebook page while he was on vacation in the United States (Read and watch the article here).
In UAE, it is an offence to use the internet to mock or deride organizations and individuals.
Their local media has reported that swearing at someone on Whatsapp could land you in jail and be fined with Dhs250,000 or $68,000.

Anyone who swears, insults or use middle finger emoji could face jail, fine or deportation(for expats).

“Sending a middle finger emoji on a smartphone or even sending a middle finger picture through email can put you in trouble. It’s an insult in the UAE and the law can punish you with either jail of up to three years or a fine of up to Dhs 500,000 ($137,000),” criminal defense lawyer Abdullah Yousef al Nasir said.

Whatever is the law they are trying to implement in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Middle East, it would be better to be mindful always of what is being posted specially in social networking sites like Facebook.

Kenyan in Saudi-Jailed For Chatting With A Woman In Facebook

The Saudi government has strict policies when it comes to interaction and segregation of men and women.

  • There are malls and stores that  allows only families. It means that women can get in but bachelors cannot, unless they are with their family.
  • Women are not supposed to dine in restaurants single's/bachelor's area, instead they should dine in the  family section.
  • Men and women who are not family related are not supposed to talk to each other or be seen together alone or in public.
  • Women are not supposed to be alone in a car with a man. However there is unclear boundaries regarding this because women are not allowed to drive, but they can hire drivers to drive for them but they have to sit at the back of the car and never on the seat next to the driver. The same thing when riding taxi.
But their policies are not clear when it comes to use of social media. Because recently a Kenyan man has been jailed after he was caught chatting with a woman in Facebook. He was also caught to have pictures of that woman in his phone.
The act is said to be in apparent contravention of the Sunni Kingdom's Puritannical Laws.

Juma Laki's mother already pleaded with their government to help him on his case and have him repatriated.
