Women in Saudi Starts Travelling Alone With Permission

Women in Saudi Arabia are now enjoying more freedom in terms of traveling abroad. It comes after the implementation of the landmark reform that allows women over the age of 21 to apply for a passport and travel the world without needing permission from a male guardian.

The reform came into effect last August 19 were hundreds or even thousands of Saudi women starts traveling without men's permission. Saudi Gazette reported that many women crossed into Bahrain on Monday unaccompanied as they take advantage of the new regulation.

It is stated on the Royal Decrees that beginning August, the permission of a male guardian for women to travel or apply passport is no longer required. This is based on the new amendments in the Travel Document Regulation that allow a woman to apply for and obtain a passport without requiring the approval of her male guardian. The amendments included granting the same rights to males and females above 21 years of age, and travel permit for custody of minors.

Many Saudi women took social media to celebrate new freedom and praise Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman for the historic move. Last year, the crown prince also granted women the right to drive as well as study at university, undergo surgery or get a job without male consent.

There are many changes taking place in Saudi Arabia especially for women this 2018! Women can now watch a sports event, can drive in June, allowed to watch concerts and other entertainment with other men and so on. These are the great steps by the Saudi Ministry of Justice to give women a freer and more secure life. But in spite of this, many Saudi women, including expats still do not have enough knowledge of their rights. The following are women's right in the Kingdom you should know! 1. A Right of a Wife The system not only grants the woman the right to sue her husband or ex-husband for alimony or acknowledgment of paternity, but it also allows any women legally living on Saudi soil, regardless of her citizenship or religion, to prosecute her current or former husband even if he is outside Saudi Arabia at the time of the lawsuit. Moreover, the new systems now support divorced women to a whole new level. For example, the system gives priority to a woman’s alimony over her husband’s personal debts. 2. Arrangement In Marriage No marriage agreement is accepted unless a woman provides a written approval, even if her guardian is her father. This arrangement grants a woman the freedom to accept a marriage proposal without any influence or coercion. In addition, if a woman is not happy with her marriage, she is free to leave the house of marriage and walk out of the agreement with no law to force her to come back. If she chooses to abandon the marriage her right to alimony will be dropped, but she is still entitled to custody of the children. 3. No delays The Ministry of Justice has designed a full female service within its courthouses. These services include advisory people who provide free consultations on everything. In addition, these departments support women at all stages up until the execution of any court order to avoid delays and procrastination. 4. Speedy justice The law emphasizes the speedy execution of justice in women-related cases.

Do female workers need "menstrual leave?"

As a woman, it is part of our lives to have a menstrual period every month that sometimes, brings unbearable pain or cramps that causes us to be unproductive at work, or worse we do not report for work and choose to stay at home for a day or two. Because of this, a resolution has been passed and approved by the members of Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) in the province of Iloilo urging Congress to pass the “Period Policy”.

The resolution said the policy will provide female workers additional 12 days of sick leave with pay every year.

Iloilo Board Member Lorenz Defensor said it is time fo the Congress to recognize that the "rights of men and women are not equal."

Defensor is known to be a firm women rights advocate in the province.

IloIlo Board Member Lorenz Defensor

In his resolution, he stated that monthly periods are a huge part of the life of a woman. Some may experience painful or heavy flow and during the period (of menstruation), most women experience psychological and physiological discomfort.

During his privilege speech, he said, unlike men, women suffers from their "physiological constitution every month that constricts them, provide them discomforts and even pain every month such that this women worker and members of our workforce deserve at least additional leave pay to provide them with a leave for wellness and recovery due this monthly physiological conditions that their bodies give them.”

4 COUNTRIES WITH MENSTRUAL LEAVE FOR FEMALE WORKERS

1. JAPAN - The country has had menstrual leave since just after World War II. According to the 1947 Labor Standards Law, any women suffering from painful periods or whose job might exacerbate period pain are allowed seirikyuuka (literally “physiological leave”).

2. TAIWAN - The 2013 amendment to the country’s Act of Gender Equality in Employment guarantees female workers three days of menstrual leave a year, in addition to the 30 days of half-paid sick leave allotted to all workers.

3. INDONESIA - Women in the workforce are entitled to have two days menstrual leave a month, though many companies simply ignore the law.

4. SOUTH KOREA - South Korean workers were granted menstrual leave in 2001, though an experiment in extending the policy to female university students was deemed a failure (“faculty members decided that the policy was being abused as an excuse for absence”).

In 2013, a Russian lawmaker proposed a draft law that would give female workers two days off a month but did not prosper after the bill was condemned by a Russian feminist.

Meanwhile in the Philippines, in 2004 the late Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago introduced the ‘‘Menstruation Leave

Act” while his son Rep. Narciso Santiago III of the Alliance for Rural Concerns files the same bill in Congress, but until now, the bill was not passed into a law.
