62 OFWs Who Failed Medical Exam in Jordan to Face Deportation

To those who pushed themselves to apply for work abroad in spite of a medical issue, having passed the medical exam in the Philippines and deemed fit to work will not guarantee an OFW that there will be no problem when they reached their host country. Some countries are very particular with diseases and will have you undergo a medical exam again and if you failed, they will send you home.

That is what happened to the OFWs in Jordan who failed their medical test.

According to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), 62 Filipino workers in Jordan are facing repatriation because of various health issues.

Gerry Rubio, DOLE public information officer, said that the 62 Filipinos were among the 457 guest workers that the Jordan Health Ministry has ordered to be deported for their failure to pass the medical test. But the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) clarified that they have yet to receive the notice of repatriation for the workers. Rubio believes that not all of the 62 Filipinos will be deported.

The Jordan Health Ministry recorded 356,045 guest workers at the directorate for medical check-up, among 457 of them were diagnosed with hepatitis B, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

Among the 14,633 Filipino workers who underwent the medical test, 35 of which were found to have tuberculosis while 27 others were afflicted with Hepatitis B.

“We don’t have the exact number of deported Filipinos but I believe that it is lower than 62,” Rubio told The Manila Times.

The Jordan Health Ministry has a policy of expelling workers who are proven to have HIV/AIDS and pulmonary tuberculosis.

According to Rosemari Duquez of the POEA’s Repatriation and Anti-Illegal Unit,There was no notice of repatriation being received from the Jordan Health Ministry.

“We have yet to receive a request for repatriation. Our POLO (Philippine Overseas Labor Office) in Jordan is checking if there is [a notice of repatriation],” Duquez told The Manila Times.

Duquez said that the recruitment agencies who deployed the workers should give assistance and shoulder the cost of their repatriation.

Earlier, Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III called on overseas bound Filipino workers to have their medical tests only in the DOH accredited clinics and hospitals.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MEDICAL EXAM FOR OFWS

The medical examination is one of the crucial requirements when you are going to work abroad.Your chance in getting a better paying job outside the country lies either you pass or fail on this test.

The Medical Examination includes laboratory tests and physical tests.Under the laboratory test are fecal test,urine test,blood test, and X-ray.The latter includes dental,ears,eye (vision) tests and the Neuro-Psychological test.Applicants that are 40 years old and up are also required to undergo ECG Test.Medical tests vary according to your destination,for example,applicants bound to Middle East undergo different procedures.

The medical exam costs Php2,500 to Php4,000 and usually takes a whole day .Your employment agency will normally ask you to take a 12-hour fasting prior to the test.After the laboratory exam,you are free to eat anything for your nourishment.If you fail to do a proper fasting,you are most likely to retake your lab exam especially the blood sugar test.A lot of applicants tend to retake this exam because of poor fasting so it is always better to follow the correct instructions.

Take note:The applicant who are required to take the medical exam are only those who already passed the selection process and most likely to be deployed.
DO NOT AGREE IF THE AGENCY ASKED YOU TO UNDERGO MEDICAL EXAM WITHOUT EVEN PASSING THE EMPLOYERS INTERVIEW.

The result of the medical test will determine if your deployment will be delayed or cancelled depending on the result.Once the result says that you are Fit-To-Work,you are green and good to go.
The result of your medical exam is valid only for 90 days from the date of issuance.In case that your deployment has been delayed,you may need to start over with your medical exam.
The medical exam fees will be shouldered by the applicant.
