The Philippine Embassy in Spain called for information on the whereabouts of Filipino fugitive Isidro Lucas Rodriguez, who is facing charges defrauding about 90,000 euros or P5.4 million from his fellow Filipinos. Lucas Rodriguez has been roaming the cities in Spain but will no longer be able to get through all exit points in Spain, according to Consul Ralf Roldan. Rodriguez is said to victimized Filipinos in Granada, Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona, promising tourist visas for their families in the Philippines and high investment returns from apartments that he reportedly leased to students and foreigners. A client who requested to with hold his/her identity said Rodriguez offered to fix her family’s tourist visas to be able to come to Spain, for a sum of 5,450 Euros or P325,000. Rodriguez claimed that he knew top government officials at the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines and even accompanied the victim in applying for a bank loan. Another victim by the name"Mayte" said that she was convinced by Rodriguez to invest her entire savings in his apartment-for-rent business amounting to 2,000-euro. An employee of the Philippine Ports authority who was caught on the Bureau of Customs CCTV camera allegedly receiving bribe money has been relieved of her post.
"As a result of her actions,I already ordered the personnel relieved from her current position pending the result of an ongoing investigation," Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago said.
He also directed  all the PPA employees to follow anti-corruption procedures in light of the CCTV video.
On Wednesday,Commissioner  Nicanor Faeldon of the BOC presented a CCTV footage of a PPA personnel allegedly receiving money from the clients.
Meanwhile,Santiago lauded the BOC for installing CCTVs and for showing the alleged malpractice of its employees.
Santiago also assures the public that the agency will not tolerate any illegal practices and will be dealt accordingly within the extent of the law.

The Bureau of Customs implemented the installation of CCTV cameras due to the reports of rampant bribery and corruption happening inside the bureau and for transparency in all customs transactions.It was started during the time of the former BOC Commissioner Lina,but the employees union of the bureau opposed it stating that it is a violation of their human rights.Last years survey from SWS show that the BOC is the leading government office in terms of corruption.
The net rating of -55 is considered "very bad".Lina's order to install additional CCTVs is according to him,a way to fight corruption inside the bureau.Both Lina and the employees union agree that one way to stop these practices is to increase the salary of the employees.

According to BOC Chief Nicanor Faeldon,even though the bureau is adorned with over 300 CCTVs a number of hard-headed employees who are still practicing illegal transactions but he still believes that transparency  is one way to fight corruption and those who will be caught will be punished accordingly if proved  guilty.

VIDEO: FIREARMS FOUND INSIDE BALIKBAYAN BOXES?

The Bureau of Customs headed by Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon seized a balikbayan box allegedly containing 10 units of dismantled high-powered firearms from the US.

The illegal shipment  that has been discovered during a random inspection conducted by the bureau stirs up confusion wether it really came from a legitimate OFW or some smugglers are taking advantage of the privilege that the government is giving the Overseas Filipino Workers.
Commissioner Faeldon made an appeal to everyone to refrain from using the name of the OFWs in order to smuggle goods into the country.

The Customs Modernization and Tariff Act of the Philippines has recently provided the increase of OFW privileges by granting them higher exemptions from payment of Customs duties when sending balikbayan boxes.
Whoever did it is obviously taking advantage of that privilege and using the name of the legitimate OFWs who are working hard overseas doing a decent job and sacrificing for the future of their families back home.

In related news,the BOC discovered in another random check,5 containers of misdeclared candies found to be lacking the appropriate Certificate of Product Registration from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) after the inspection.The alerted shipment from China has a dutiable value of almost Php2Million according to BOC.

THIS YOUNG MAN SCAMMED ALMOST 200 OFWS, GIVING HIM THOUSANDS OF THEIR MONEY

An OFW hiding under the name Marie was a victim of a suspected scammer, losing her hard earned money that she saved for 2 years while working overseas. It was supposed to be an investment that could earn up to 40% a week, but in the end, it turned out to be a scam.

A 21-years old suspect named Bonjomar Laguna whom she only met on Facebook was sweet-talking and seemingly convincing that she eventually invested up to P50,000.

She begun to panic when the suspect deactivated his Facebook account after several weeks that Marie was complaining of not receiving her promised 40% pay-out. It was a nightmare. Just last month, when found out that the suspect’s Facebook account was again reactivated she talked to the guy and eventually they agreed to meet for her to give another P200,000 as another set of investment, and that's when she asked the help of the police which lead to Laguna’s arrest.
Unfortunately, Laguna admitted that there are around 300 people that was victimized and around 150 to 200 of them are overseas Filipino workers.
