6 Clark Airport Employees, Fired and Facing Charges For Ransacking OFW's Baggage

Aside from being fired from their job, six employees in Clark International Airport is now facing criminal charges for the allegedly ransacking baggage of Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) at the airport.

The suspects are employees of ground handling company, Miascor. The company is under contract with the airlines that service flights in Clark and handle baggage of passengers.

Clark International Airport Corp (CIAC) said in the statement that Miascor has filed qualified theft against the six suspect. They were fired in their job, Friday morning, January 12, 2018.

CIAC has also filed separate theft charges against the six suspects at the City Prosecutor's Office in Mabalacat, Pampanga, and has banned them from entering the airport premises.

The statement added that the suspects allegedly ransacked the baggage belonging to OFW identified as Jovenil Dela Cruz from Pandi, Bulacan inside the Miascor office at the airport terminal.

The handling company settled with the OFW for the lost item amounting to P82,824.00.

"NO POCKET POLICY" TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN NAIA

Starting October 6, the "No Pocket Policy" will be implemented strictly to all baggage loaders at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA)



Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said it aims to eradicate baggage pilferage and to improve security.

Under the No Pocket Policy, baggage loaders are not allowed to wear uniforms that have pockets.

This is to prevent thefts that targets Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and travelers.

MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal said the policy will be strictly implemented to all loaders as a precaution, to ensure that if items are taken from the luggage of passengers, employees cannot easily conceal these.

Ground handlers will be provided with new uniforms that have no pockets. Those who will still wear uniforms with pockets will be barred from entering baggage areas in all NAIA terminals.

PENALTIES:

First Offense: Baggage handlers caught for the first time wearing uniforms that have pockets will be given a warning.

Second Offense: Those caught for the second time will have their access pass canceled.

Third Offense: Termination for those who commit a violation for the third time.

It was November 2008 when the No Pocket Policy was implemented to avoid baggage theft that was blamed on airport baggage handlers.

In a recent inspection, at least 20 employees of airline service providers were caught violating the policy; while some other ramp staff, for compliance purposes, were found to have manually stitched their uniform pockets.

Other than no pocket policy, Monreal appealed to airlines companies to bar aircraft cleaners from wearing jewelry when boarding an aircraft.

“This will further promote the virtue of honesty as it will encourage aircraft cleaners to turn over valuable items, especially jewelry, that they may find in the aircraft while cleaning,” he said.

In Hong Kong, a former baggage handler at Chek Lap Kok International Airport was sentenced to four months in prison for stealing a laptop from the baggage of an Air Asia passenger.

The suspect is 40-year-old Filipino with initials R.T, after he pleaded guilty to one charge of theft for stealing a Lenovo laptop computer.

The incident happened on November 14, 2014, between 4 p.m and 6 p.m. at the airport.

The defendant is a Hong Kong resident.

According to the investigators, the Filipino "ransacked" the luggage of the victim at took out the laptop but the undercover policeman conducting "anti-baggage theft" saw him.
