Consul general to Hong Kong Antonio A. Morales thanked Locsin for choosing Hong Kong as the first site for the OAS outside the country. More than 234,000 Filipinos are deployed in Hong Kong, 215,000 of whom or 92% are household service workers. The OAS hopes to give workers abroad flexibility in choosing passport appointments. With just four easy steps and a few minutes using either a mobile phone or computer, passport applicants no longer have to line up, call or e-mail to make an appointment. Locsin said he hopes to expand the OAS to other countries in Asia, as well as in other regions such as the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.

You Can Renew Your Passport Online By 2019?

The  Department Of Foreign Affairs Consular Services has been criticized for slow passport processing, from scheduling of appointments up to releasing of passports. As a solution, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said the DFA is now planning on maximizing the use of modern technology to serve the Filipino people better— by making the passport renewal available online and it could be made possible by 2019.

The service, however, is limited to those who applied beginning August 2016 as the previous passport contractor turned over corrupted and obsolete data, Cayetano said. He added the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has to take biometrics again. "Once we have the biometrics, pwede nang hindi magpakita sa offices and we can do the renewals online," Cayetano said. Normal passport processing by June Cayetano also said two new regional consular offices will open in March, while six passport on wheels with five machines each will arrive by June to help normalize the processing of passports and address 60 to 80 percent of the backlog. He said six more regional consular offices will open nationwide between March and June. To accommodate the expected increase in the demand of passport renewals and issuance in April and May, the consular office along ASEANA will be open until Saturday. The Foreign Affairs Secretary said the DFA is also looking at increasing the operating hours of other consular offices.
