UPDATE: INTERNET IN EDSA IS FREE - Here Are The IDs

UPDATE: The free wifi service has begun, and people travelling in EDSA are reporting varying speeds to no speed at all. This is because in some areas, the MRT stations are too far in between for the hotspots to cover the entire EDSA. This will be resolved soon as DICT promises to keep the speeds to double-digits or the telcos will have to deal with the wrath of the President.

If you want to connect to the free wifi service, just look fro "FREE EDSA wifi" and "Juan Konek" WiFi IDs. Later on, they will merge into one ID, "PipolKonek".

Globe and PLDT offered their services at no cost to the government. Both telcos have been providing free Wi-Fi connection in different transport hubs such as airports and bus terminals.

The second stage of the project will cover EDSA from Cubao to North Avenue, and from Guadalupe to Taft Avenue. The third and last stage will cover the entire stretch of EDSA, outside the reach of MRT, from MOA to Balintawak. This is expected to be completed by the end of August 2017.

ORIGINAL BLOG: Just in time for the National Independence Day Celebration, the Department of Information and Communications Technology has confirmed that the EDSA WIFI PROJECT will launch on the same day.

The DICT, together with the National Telecommunications Commmission (NTC), will formally launch the free Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet services, dubbed as “Alay Para sa Malayang Pilipino,” in the whole stretch of EDSA.

Free WiFi has long been in the discussion, even before President Duterte took office. In his very first SONA, the current president promised to provide free WiFi nationwide, and now he has delivered on that promise. The Chief Executive instructed the DICT “to provide Wi-Fi access in selected public places throughout the country.”“I have ordered the newly-created DICT to develop a National Broadband Plan to accelerate the deployment of fiber optic cables and wireless technologies to improve Internet speed,” President Duterte also said.

Proposed Number of WiFi Hotspots In the Country

To make the EDSA project happen, the DICT employed strategies, which include providing access points in all MRT stations and in between stations and enhancing infrastructures for cellular services along EDSA. The WiFi network will be available to the entire 24-kilometer stretch of EDSA. Commuters will be able to login to the network for free for the 1st 30 minutes at a speed of up to 100Mbps.

Service testing of the project will be done today, June 10, so if you are travelling via EDSA, you may have an early taste of the Free WiFi while getting stuck on traffic. The Cubao to Guadalupe stretch is said to be a priority in the implementation.

DICT’s partner agencies include the Department of Transportation – Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT3), PLDT and SMART, Globe Telecom, ABRATIQUE & ASSOCIATES, Metro Rail Transit Corporation (MRT DevCo), Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA, Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA), Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), and the local governments of Quezon City, Makati City, Mandaluyong and Pasay City. The project will be followed by the implementation of Free WiFi in town plazas, parks, government offices, health units, and transport terminals including train stations, seaports, and airports around the country. The government is allotting Php3 billion for the 10-year internet project that aims to set up 100,000 Wi-Fi sites to address the poor internet access and connectivity in the country.

Dad Did Not See Family For 11 Years, Hopes To Attend Son's Graduation

Construction worker Eusebio Ledesma Jr, worked in Manila to provide for his family has approached media personality Raffy Tulfo in a bid to ask for assistance. His dilemma is that he does not have enough money to travel back to his hometown in Catanduanes to attend his son, Jhumar's graduation. And the twist, he has never been with his family for eleven years! This is due to the fact that he'd rather send the meager salary to his family rather than spend it for bus tickets. In fact, Mang Eusebio had to advance one week salary from his employer just so he could pay his son's graduation fees. Jhumar is said to be sad due to the fact that his father will not be with them during this important occasion. Upon learning of his problem, Mr. Raffy Tulfo has immediately pledged to shoulder Mang Eusebio's transport costs. Not just that, Mr. Tulfo is giving Mang Eusebio P10,000 in cash, to provide for a graduation feast as well as extra spending money for his family. Everyone around were touched by Mang Eusebio's story, as they were crying while listening to his story. Upon learning that Jhumar's graduation is looming, Mr. Tulfo instructed his staff to assist Mang Eusebio to get to his hometown as fast as possible. He received assistance right up to the time he boarded the bus. Mang Eusebio arrived just in time. Calling from his studio in Quezon City, Mr. Raffy Tulfo spoke with Jhumar as graduation music started playing in background. The boy does not know that his father is already in attendance. The video later shows Mang Eusebio with his son Jhumar, meeting Mr. Raffy in his radio and tv program Raffy Tulfo in Action. He interviews the two and things becomes emotional as Jhumar expresses his gratitude to his parents for their big sacrifice just so he could finish college. The father and son share a loving hug as everyone looks on with tearful eyes. Mang Eusebio also thanked his son, for fulfilling his promise of finishing his studies, in the hope that he will help lift their family from a difficult life. Things became more cheerful later as Mr. Tulfo gave Jhumar a gift of cash money so he could buy new clothes for his Job interview. FASTER INTERNET IN THE PHILIPPINES SOON THROUGH DUTERTE'S NATIONAL BROADBAND PLAN?

Good news to the Filipinos whose business and livelihood rely on good and fast internet connection such as stocks trading and online marketing! President Rodrigo Duterte has already approved the establishment of the National Government Portal and a National Broadband Plan during the 13th Cabinet Meeting in Malacañang today.

In a Facebook post of Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol, he said that after a presentation made by Dept. of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Rodolfo Salalima, Pres. Duterte emphasized the need for faster communications in the country.
Pres. Duterte earlier said he would like the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) "to develop a national broadband plan to accelerate the deployment of fiber optics cables and wireless technologies to improve internet speed." As a response to the President's SONA statement, Salalima presented the DICT's national broadband plan that aims to push for free WiFi access to more areas in the countryside.

The broadband program has been in the work since former President Gloria Arroyo but due to allegations of corruption and illegality, Mrs. Arroyo cancelled the US$329 million National Broadband Network (NBN) deal with China's ZTE Corp.just 6 months after she signed it in April 2007.

Fast internet connection benefits not only those who are on internet business and online business but even our over 10 million OFWs around the world and their families in the Philippines. When the era of snail mails, voice tapes and telegram ended and the internet age started, communications with their loved one back home can be much easier.
