AFTER 27 YEARS OF WAITING, FERDINAND MARCOS CAN FINALLY BE BURIED AT THE HEROES CEMETERY

Ferdinand Edralin Marcos, former president of the Republic of the Philippines died of cardiac arrest on Sept 28,1989 at the age of 72 while on exile in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was battling heart, kidney,  and lung problems. After his death, he was interred in a private mausoleum at Byodo-In Temple on the island of Oahu, visited daily by the Marcos family, political allies and friends.
Although Mrs Corazon Aquino offered condolences to the bereaved family, she still wouldn't allow the former president to be buried in the Philippines.

Federal Aviation Authority also issued  an order barring any aircraft from leaving Hawaii or any other point in the U.S. bearing the remains of  ex-president Marcos.

In 1991, Mr. Marcos' widow, Mrs. Imelda  Marcos was allowed by then -president Aquino to return to the Phils  to  face the charges against her; but the remains of the former president  was still left in Hawaii.
In 1993, then-president Fidel Ramos lifted the ban of Marcos' body to return to the country. Like Mrs. Aquino, Mr. Ramos did not allow the former president to be buried at the heroes cemetery. The body has been brought to his hometown, Ilocos Norte.

For 27 years the remains of Mr. Marcos was preserved inside the refrigerated  glass crypt while his family is eagerly waiting for him to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes Cemetery).

When President Rodrigo Duterte was elected,he promised to give Mr. Marcos the long awaited burial at the heroes cemetery. He said  that Mr. Marcos is entitled to be buried as a former soldier and a president of the republic ,not by his own mandate as president , but because it is  stated by the law.

On November 8, 2016, the Supreme Court favored Marcos' burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB).

With 9 votes in favor and 5 votes against, with  1  inhibited to vote, the Supreme Court allowed former president Marcos' burial  under the following grounds:

1. There was no grave abuse of discretion on the part of President Rodrigo Duterte in ordering the burial of Marcos at LNMB because it was done in the exercise of his mandate. There is also no law that prohibits the burial of Marcos' remains at the LNMB.

2. President Duterte has the power to reserve for public use and for specific public purposes, any of the lands under public domain.

3. Marcos' remains, under regulations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, can be interred at LNMB because he was a former president, commander-in-chief, soldier, medal of valor awardee, and legislator.

4. The Supreme Court disagreed Marcos was "dishonorably discharged," saying the disqualification only pertains to the military.
