Pres. Duterte has no problem with gays but against gay marriage?

As one of the two predominantly Catholic nations in Asia, same-sex marriage will not be legalized anytime soon in the Philippines.

This is after President Rodrigo Duterte reverses his campaign promise to support bills in Congress that will allow gay unions.

In his meeting with the Filipino community in Myanmar, Duterte said, gay marriage may work for others, but not for a predominantly Catholic country.

He said, the law only recognizes the union between a man and a woman.

As a Catholic nation, the president said, it will steadfastly oppose same-sex marriage.

He pointed to a recent issue of Time magazine that tackled gender issues, featuring a transgender woman on its cover.

Duterte wandered into the topic after claiming that the European Union expressed its concern over the possible return of the death penalty and the growing death toll from Duterte's war on drugs.

“That is their culture,” he said, referring to other countries where the American magazine circulates. “That’s for them. That can’t apply to us, because we are Catholics,”

Duterte who will be turning 72-years old next week clarified that he was only following what was in the books, and he did not take issue with anyone sexuality.

Duterte said his stance on same-sex marriage is based on law. He added, two of his brothers-in-law and some of his cousins are gay.

"Saan ka pinuwinesto ng Diyos, diyan ka lang. Huwag mong haluin kaming lahat," he said.

The president's statement is in contrast to what he said during 2016 campaign when he expressed support for possible legislation allowing same-sex marriage.

January last year, he said that there appeared to be an “error in the Bible” when it said unions must be only between men and women.

It should have stated that marriages were for “Adam, Eve and the gays,” Duterte said to the gay community.

On February 18, 2016, he said that if the bill reaches him as a president, in whatever capacity he will consider it.
