UAE President, Signed UAE Domestic Workers Law; Bahrain Promises to Protect OFWs


Do you have to take employers insurance? With the implementation of Philippine's deployment ban of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) bound to Kuwait, other countries in the Middle East are now stepping up to take good care of Filipino workers in their country especially the domestic workers.

In the United Arab Emirates, Domestic Workers Law or Federal Law No. 10 of 2017 stipulates working condition for domestic helpers was approved and signed by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.


This can be considered as domestic workers bill of rights.

Under this law, Domestic Workers are entitled to the following;
  • Payment of wages, as set out in the standard contract, within ten days from the day they are due;One day of paid rest per week
  • Twelve hours of rest per day, including eight hours of consecutive rest
  • Medical insurance provided by the employer
  • 30 days medical leave per year
  • A round-trip ticket home every two years
  • A decent accommodation
  • Decent meals at the employer’s expense
  • Clothing, if required by the employer, at the employer’s expense
  • Possession of their personal identification papers such as passports, IDs etc; and
  • Either the employer or the worker can refer a dispute to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The ministry will attempt to resolve the dispute amicably within a period of two weeks. If no resolution is reached, then the matter will be referred to a court. Under this law, cases filed by workers are exempted from court fees at all stages of litigation and must be heard in a speedy and prompt manner.

This is being clarified that new professions under domestic helper's category are only for households and not for companies.

On the other hand, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain gave his assurance that he and the Bahraini government are committed to protecting the rights of Filipino workers in the Kingdom.

Bahrain Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa made this assurance following the decision of the Philippine government to issue a total ban on the deployment of OFWs to Kuwait.

According to DFA, Bahrain prince reiterated his administration and fondness for the Filipino people praised them for being efficient and very good workers.He even mentioned that more Filipino workers should come to Bahrain.
