P1,000 SSS PENSION HIKE, TO BEGIN NEXT MONTH

Social Security System (SSS) pensioner has now a reason to celebrate.

In January, SSS pension is set to increase by P1,000.

This news was confirmed by SSS Commission Chairman Amado Valdez.

This was after the Senate Committee on Government and Public Enterprises gave the SSS the green light to implement an initial grant of P1,000 increase in the monthly pension of its retiree members starting next month.

The amount is half of the proposed P2,000 increase in monthly pension that lawmakers previously approved and revived after being vetoed in the last administration by former President Benigno S. Aquino.

Senator Richard Gordon, who chairs the committee, said he agreed to the P1,000 increase so as not to put SSS funds in peril.

“It (P2,000 increase) can’t be done. Their reserves would be compromised. We don’t want them to go bankrupt. We don’t want to give them temporary happiness only to find out later it cannot be sustained,” Gordon said in an interview after the hearing.

Valdez explains that the increase will be on stagger basis because they needed to make sure that SSS had enough funds by going unutilized assets.

It means that retirees will receive a P2,000 increase in their monthly SSS pension on staggered basis – the first half in January 2017 and the second tranche in 2022.

As of today, there are pending bills in Congress for the said hike.

"Sa SSS, approved na 'yung committee report. Nasa committee on rules ngayon, at anytime, pwede na isalang 'yun sa plenary," Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate said.

But Zarate said, the House was cold to the second tranche being implemented on 2022.

"I was in that meeting and ang initial reaction ni Speaker Alvarez, maghapag sila ng concrete proposal pero napakalayo ng 2022 at hindi acceptable 'yun," he said.

Former President Benigno Aquino vetoed the same bill in the previous Congress, saying the SSS simply cannot afford the raise without any increase in contributions.
