What Your Passport Color Really Means

Passport Index Vice President of Marketing Hrant Boghossian said, most passports in the world are based on blue and red primary colors, though there's an enormous degree of variation in hues.  He added that geography, politics, and even religion comes into consideration when a country selects its passport color, there is no guidelines or regulation covering the color of these national documents.  So what does the color means? He said it is the matter of national identity.

Passport colors come in shades of red, blue, green and black.
Many of us own a Philippine passport. But have you asked yourself why are you holding a dark maroon (shades of red) color passport?

RED PASSPORTS

Burgundy, red or maroon passport

Twenty-seven out of 28 member countries of European Unions is using a burgundy passport and Croatia is the only exception with a blue cover. EU passport is almost a lilac color because their diplomats believed that maroon is a mundane color

Red passport is considered to be most common and often use by countries with a historical or current communist system.  Aside from the member of the EU, citizens of Slovenia, China, Serbia, Russia, Latvia, Romania, Poland, and Georgia is using a red passport. Countries who are interested in joining the EU such as Turkey, Macedonia, and Albia changes the color of their passport to red, a few years ago.

In addition, countries belong to Andean Community of Nations (also known for past EU-ambitions) such as Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru has also burgundy passport.

On the other hand, Switzerland, has a bright red passport cover, mirroring its bold flag and Philippines is also using a red passport (dark maroon) from maroon and green passport.

BLUE PASSPORT

The next most common passport color and it symbolizes the "new world."



Fifteen Caribbean countries also know as Caricom states have a blue passport. Mercosur countries that consist of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay is using a blue passport, except Venezuela that still using a red passport from its time in Andean Community. Other South American countries have a blue passport cover that symbolizes its connection Wth Mercosur - a trade union. 

The United States started using a navy blue passport in 1976 to match the shade found in the American Flag.

Boghossian said that first travel documents in the US were red. They used a green passport in the 1930s followed by the burgundy and black passport in 1970s.

GREEN PASSPORT

Most Islamic states use green passports because of the importance of the color in their religion. 



Countries that uses green passport includes Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. It is considered to be the favorite color of Prophet Muhammad and a symbol of nature and life.

Variations of green are also used by members of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) such as Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger, Ivory Coast and Senegal as West African Countries.

South Korea is using a green passport too and considered to be second most powerful passport in the world. Its holders will be able to visit 145 countries visa-free.

BLACK PASSPORT

Black passport is considered to be rarest among four.



 Countries that use black passport includes Republic of Botswana, Zambia Burundi, Gabon, Angola, Chad, Congo, Malawi and many other African Countries. 

New Zealand uses a black color in their passport because it is one of the country's national colors.
