How to Avoid Being Victimized by Pickpockets and Thieves

Pickpockets and thieves are everywhere. They are on the streets, in restaurants, malls, terminals, churches (and even in the internet, they are parasites that feed on everything that other people worked hard for). They work alone or in groups and even ready to inflict harm if confronted. They victimized people who look vulnerable and easy to destruct such as students elderly and in some cases OFWs who are enjoying their vacation in the Philippines. They lurk in busy and crowded places . Like in the case of an OFW who was walking with his family in the crowded street of Pasay. He lost a mobile phone as 7 accomplices squeeze their way to the victim who was at that time, have his both hands occupied with goods. The incident was caught on CCTV camera. The OFW was spotted by the group that is composed of 7 people while having a snack at a nook near the MRT Taft Ave. Station with his family. When the OFW and his family finally moved and walk, the group surrounded the family and squeezed through them, the OFW, unaware of what is happening continued to walk when he suddenly felt that his mobile phone he kept on his pocket was gone. A concerned citizen who witnessed the crime at a distance told him that his mobile phone was passed to a nearby woman. The OFW grabbed her arm until he retrieved the mobile phone. The police said that there are several complaints about the place of rampant pickpocketing incidents. The only problem is that, after the victim has retrieved their belongings, they do not file and pursue the case anymore. For that reason, the pickpockets are still out of the prison and roaming everywhere looking for their prey. Pickpocketing was recorded a hundreds of years back and is still exists in our modern times in any part of the world. They take something of value from the victim and get away with it. the only thing we can do to avoid falling victim to these thieves are to not give them the opportunity they always seek. How do we avoid becoming a victim? Here some are practical tips that we can use to avoid being victimized by pickpockets: Limit the number of belongings we bring. Travel light, travel smart. Avoid being a "show-off ". It can be a threat to your safety or worst, your life. Be aware of the places you go to and people you meet. Avoid backstreets and dark places. Keep yourself alert. Know the proper way to carry your belongings. Do not make it easy for the pickpockets to victimize you. Keep a keen eye and presence of mind. Be vigilant and alert. Do not let them know that you are not familiar with the place. The best way to avoid being a target is to outsmart them. Do not underestimate what these thieves can do. They can inflict harm and do unimaginable things just to get what they want. Remember that they do it for living. They are trained and determined to take something of value from anyone, including you. Keep safe, everyone! The defense lawyer asked for a lighter sentence, saying Mania was in deep regret on what he did, no property was lost and that the suspect has three of his six children still going to school and that he wanted to be with them soon. Chainrai is more likely to give what the defense lawyer was asking saying that Mania committed the same offense in 1991 for which he was convicted and that he changed his identity to breach his deportation order. “The sentences will neither be concurrent nor consecutive, but will overlap,” Chainrai said. Mania was sentenced to 12 months in jail for the first charge of attempted theft,. For the second he got a 27-month jail sentence to take effect after the third month of the first sentence, a total of 30 months imprisonment sentence. Mania and Ortega were arrested on April 25 last year after allegedly trying to pick the wallet of a certain Mr Wong, an MTR passenger who they followed from the Jordan station to Mongkok. Mania waited since Dec 9 for his sentence as Chainrai said she wanted to wait for the outcome of the trial of his alleged partner, Ortega, before sentencing the first defendant. Mr. Wong noticed the attempt while Mania had his right hand in Wong’s backpack and called the police leading to the arrest of the two suspects were in Cheung Sha Wan Station. Mania pleaded guilty to both charges laid against him at the start of the hearing on Dec 9, while Ortega pleaded otherwise to the attempted theft charge. Mania was issued a deportation order on Mar 2, 1992 after serving a sentence for an earlier theft conviction, according to the prosecution. Ortega was acquitted of the charge immediately the following day. About a month later, Ortega approached the Consulate’s assistance to nationals section to apply for a legal aid with a thick wad of forms to fill out . An ATN officer said he would review Ortega’s application before they submit it to the Legal Aid Department. Why OFWs Remain in Neck-deep Debts After Years Of Working Abroad? From beginning to the end, the real life of OFWs are colorful indeed. To work outside the country, they invest too much, spend a lot. They start making loans for the processing of their needed documents to work abroad. From application until they can actually leave the country, they spend big sum of money for it. But after they were being able to finally work abroad, the story did not just end there. More often than not, the big sum of cash they used to pay the recruitment agency fees cause them to suffer from indebtedness. They were being charged and burdened with too much fees, which are not even compliant with the law. Because of their eagerness to work overseas, they immerse themselves to high interest loans for the sake of working abroad. The recruitment agencies play a big role why the OFWs are suffering from neck-deep debts. Even some licensed agencies, they freely exploit the vulnerability of the OFWs. Due to their greed to collect more cash from every OFWs that they deploy, it results to making the life of OFWs more miserable by burying them in debts. The result of high fees collected by the agencies can even last even the OFWs have been deployed abroad. Some employers deduct it to their salaries for a number of months, leaving the OFWs broke when their much awaited salary comes. But it doesn't end there. Some of these agencies conspire with their counterpart agencies to urge the foreign employers to cut the salary of the poor OFWs in their favor. That is of course, beyond the expectation of the OFWs. Even before they leave, the promised salary is already computed and allocated. They have already planned how much they are going to send to their family back home. If the employer would cut the amount of the salary they are expecting to receive, the planned remittance will surely suffer, it includes the loans that they promised to be paid immediately on time when they finally work abroad. There is such a situation that their family in the Philippines carry the burden of paying for these loans made by the OFW. For example. An OFW father that has found a mistress, which is a fellow OFW, who turned his back to his family and to his obligations to pay his loans made for the recruitment fees. The result, the poor family back home, aside from not receiving any remittance, they will be the ones who are obliged to pay the loans made by the OFW, adding weight to the emotional burden they already had aside from their daily needs. According to TIEZA ( Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority), it is a levy imposed by the Philippine government on individuals who are leaving the Philippines, as provided for by Presidential Decree (PD) 1183. A full travel tax for first class passenger is PhP2,700.00 and PhP1,620.00 for economy class. For an average Filipino like me, it’s quite pricey. Overseas Filipino Workers, diplomats and airline crew members are exempted from paying travel tax before but now, travel tax for OFWs are included in their air ticket prize and can be refunded later at the refund counter at NAIA. However, OFW dependents can apply for standard reduced travel tax. Children or Minors from 2 years and one (1) day to 12th birthday on date of travel. Accredited Filipino journalist whose travel is in pursuit of journalistic assignment and those authorized by the President of the Republic of the Philippines for reasons of national interest, are also entitled to avail the reduced travel tax.

Limit the number of belongings we bring. Travel light, travel smart.
Judge Bina Chainrai handed down the sentence for Jolito Mania, 52, after delaying it for more than one and a half months to wait for the result of the case of his alleged partner and co-defendant, Marcelo Ortega Jr. Ortega, who was cleared of the charges, has remained in Hong Kong and is reportedly planning to seek compensation from the government for the eight months that he was detained while the case was pending in court.
Avoid being a "show-off ". It can be a threat to your safety or worst, your life.
A Filipino tourist was sentenced to a total of 30 months in jail by a District Court judge. He pleaded guilty in December to charges of attempted theft and breach of a deportation order.
Keep a keen eye and presence of mind. Be vigilant and alert.
Do not let them know that you are not familiar with the place. The best way to avoid being a target is to outsmart them.
A Filipino tourist was sentenced to a total of 30 months in jail by a District Court judge. He pleaded guilty in December to charges of attempted theft and breach of a deportation order. A GUY TRAVELLED ALL THE WAY TO HONG KONG TO DO PICKPOCKETING, TO STAY IN JAIL FOR 30 MONTHS
A Filipino tourist was sentenced to a total of 30 months in jail by a District Court judge. He pleaded guilty in December to charges of attempted theft and breach of a deportation order. OFW Dead Because of Money Business and Another A Victim of Budol-Budol Gang.
